TRENDS

AND FADS
Jeffrey Jr. A. Gabata
Trend and Fad
Everyday, “fads” and “trends” are almost
always used interchangeably:

• “Trending in Twitter…”
• “There’s a new fad in school!”
• “What are the hottest trends today?”
FAD
A fad rarely endures, simply known
as a “flash in the pan”. The behavior
of a fad quickly rises and
immediately falls upon losing
discernment of the novelty item or
idea.
FAD
A fad comes and goes, this is the
characteristic of a fad and thus,
inventors must accept the short life
span of it. It is seen in a single
industry and seldom into other
sectors.
TREND
A trend is a product or idea that
stayed through time because of the
benefits people get.
TREND
A trend has the possibility of
transforming into a long-term
development for a future market.
Trend and Fad
Both fads and trends are product of people’s
reaction to events.

Fad/Trend
Trend and Fad
The nature of fads and
trends can both be
tangible and non-
tangible.
Features of a TREND:

1. Easy
2. Consistent
3. Sustainable
4. Broad Application
Easy
Trends do not require many
adjustments on the part of
subscribers. In fact, tends are
smooth and straightforward to
follow.
Consistent
Trends generate uniform and
tangible results. Unlike fads which
claim to deliver results in the often-
unrealistic timeframe, trends are
steady and dependable.
Sustainable
Trends exist and can be maintained
for a long time. Unlike fads which
are brief and fleeting, trends are for
the long-term.
Broad application
Trends are consumed by a large group
of people from different sectors of
society and various walks of life.
Unlike fads which are contained in one
segment of the society, trends almost
have a general acceptance among
people.
TREND is easy to spot when:

1. It comes from a fad.

2. It stays long-term in the market.
3. It provides solutions to people’s
problems.
4. It assesses a successful evolution
of the product.
A company that ignores a
trend will especially be
forced to adopt, otherwise,
the institution will be left
behind.
