SUBSTANCES
Science 7
(Lesson 1: Differentiating
substance from mixture )
LEARNING COMPETENCIES :
1. Distinguish mixtures from
substances based on a set of
properties;
2. Identify properties of mixtures
from substances; and
3. Enumerate the methods of
separating mixtures.
LESSON 1 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the session, the
learners should be able to:
-Differentiate substances from mixtures.

mixtures.
-Recognize the importance of mixtures
and substances in the lives of men.

SOLID
Ham & cheese sandwich is made
up of sandwich, ham, cheese and
mayonnaise.
How many ingredients do
we need to make a ham
and cheese sandwich?
We need 4 ingredients
to make the sandwich.
What is a cup of coffee
made of?
A coffee is made up
of coffee, ice,milk,
and water.
How may ingredients
do we need to make a
coffee?
1.We need 4
ingredients to make a
coffee.
Ham and cheese sandwich and
coffee are examples of mixtures.
We will learn more about
mixtures and substances in this
day’s lesson. Don’t forget to take
donw note.
GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1.How do we classify matter as to its
composition?
2.How do we divide pure substances?
3.What are substances?
4.What are the two kinds of mixtures?
5.How do we differentiate mixtures from
substances?
What is Matter?
1.Matter is anything that occupies
space and has mass. Everything
that you see around you is an
example of matter. Matter
according to its composition
can be classified as pure
substances and mixtures.

Pure substances are made up of identical
particles, homogeneous and they have
definite set of properties. All these particles
are the same throughout
1.Pure substances can be elements
of compounds.

For example: Gold is made up of one

type of atom which is Au or gold. Even
if we will break it into smaller pieces, it
is still composed of Au. Gold is an
example of elements and all elements
in the periodic table are examples of
pure substances.
Compounds are made up of atoms of 2 or
more elements that are combined
chemically in a specific ratio, and these
compounds cannot be separated
chemically.

For example, is water. It is made up of 2 atoms

of hydrogen and 1 atom of oxygen. If there are
more 1 atom of oxygen another compound will
be formed. And water cannot be separated
physically. Examples of compounds are salt,
baking soda, and sugar.
Pure substances also have fixed
melting and boiling point.
Mixtures on the other hand are formed when 2 or more
substances are combined together by physical means.
It is made up of two non-identical particles.

For example: water and salt solution, we need water

(H2O) and salt (NaCl). They have different non-identical
particles.
Water and salt are examples of elements.
HOMOGENEOUS
MIXTURES
HETEROGENEOUS
Homogeneous mixture has a uniform
composition, cannot be seen easily and
separately, and contains one phase of matter.
A perfect example is the mixture of coffee and
water. When mixed it becomes one phase of
matter but composed of two substances.
Heterogeneous mixture, don’t have a
uniform composition, the sizes of the
particles vary, and substances can be
easily identified from the other. An example
is the mixture of fruits and milk. We can
still identify the mixture easily but can see
more than one phase (form) because the
particles are not evenly and not uniformly
distributed.
LET’S GO BACK TO GUIDE QUESTIONS.

How can we classify

a baking soda, is it a
substance or a
mixture? Why?
1.It is a substance
because it is a
compound. It has
a definite ratio to
be formed.
How about a
carbonara, is it a
substance or a
mixture?
1.Carbonara is a
mixture because
they are formed
by physical
means.
If carbonara is a
mixture, what kind
of mixture is it?
It is a heterogeneous
mixture because the
substances combined can
still be identifiable even
when mixed.
Do you agree that mixtures and
substances can be found
around us? How important are
substances?
Yes, pure substances are important
because elements and compound are
needed in our lives. Salt made our
cooking delicious, sugar makes coffee
sweet and so on.

Without mixtures, we will not be able to

discover other things like cement in
building our houses.
