LO: I can describe how pressure occurs in

gases and explain how it may change.

Starter: On a whiteboard, draw

the particle diagrams for solids,
liquids and gases.
Bumping particles
The particles in a gas move quickly in all directions, but
they don't get far before they bump into each other or
the walls of their container.
When gas particles hit
the walls of their
container they cause
pressure. The more
particles that hit the
walls, the higher the
pressure.

This is why the pressure in a tyre or

balloon goes up when more air is pumped in.
Why does this
happen?
I put an inflated balloon into the
freezer, what happens to it?
Effect of temperature
• When we increase temperature,
– particles gain kinetic energy
– Move faster
– Collide more often with the walls of the container
– And with more force,
– So pressure increases
• When we decrease temperature,
– Particles lose kinetic energy
– Move closer and more slowly
– Collide with wall of container less often
– and with less force
– So pressure decreases
