Matching Information to Paragraphs

In this kind of question, you are asked to match

.statements to paragraphs in the reading text

The statements could be reasons, descriptions,

summaries, definitions, facts or
.explanations

 Reading Skills

You will first have to be able to skim the reading text -1

.to get a general meaning of each paragraph
You will also have to scan for specific words within -2
the paragraphs. It is more likely that you will be looking
for synonyms (different words that mean the same or
nearly the same) and paraphrases rather than keywords
.from the question statements
When you have found the words or phrases you think -3
might give you the correct answer, you have to read
very carefully in order to fully understand the meaning
.to be able to decide if it is really the correct answer
Matching Features-2

These are types of questions that that require you to

find specific information about given features and
.match it

For example, you can be given different people who

discovered different things at different times. You
are now required to match who discovered what at
what time. You therefore need to be very keen when
.matching
Matching Features
Strategies

Carefully read all the given features and -1

.highlight keywords

Scan the passage and look for keywords -2

Read the part of the passage that contains -3

keywords (you may sometimes find it also
necessary to go through the previous and the
next sentence.)
Summary Completion-3

.A summary part of the text will be given to you

You are required to complete it by picking words from

the text with a given maximum number of words to
.complete it
Summary Completion
! Strategies

Read the question carefully. Note how many words you -1

can write (normally one, two or three) and if you should
.get the words from the reading text or a list
Skim the summary and try to understand the overall -2
.meaning
Try to predict the answers before you look at the reading
text. Also, think about the word type (noun, verb,
.adjective) that should be included
If you have a list of words, try to guess which 2 or 3 the-3
answer might be. Pay attention to words that collocate
.well with the words in the sentence
Identify which part of the reading text the summary -4
relates to. Scanning for synonyms from the summary
.will help you do this

Look at that part of the section more carefully and -5

choose the correct answer. Remember to be careful
.with synonyms

Check to see if your word makes the -6

.sentence grammatically correct
! Reading Tips

Skimming -1
This is a IELTS reading task technique that allows you
to read through a given text very fast and within the
shortest time possible while identifying main ideas of
.the given text

This technique will help you save on time and will also
allow you to have an idea of what the text is all about
.within the first reading
Scanning -2

This is a technique where you read through every line-

.very quickly looking for a specific word or phrase

It comes in handy when you are looking for a one--

.word answer
! Use Key Words-3

This is self‐explanatory. Reading a text without-

identifying the keywords is a suicide mission! Don’t
.try it

Ensure that you mark some of the keywords as they-

will be helpful when time for answering questions
come .You wouldn’t need more time to scan through
.the text again
! Read the title of the text-4

The title of the text that you are reading will tell you
.what the text is all about

.First read the title

It will give you an idea of the content of the text so

you’ll have an ample time comprehending since you
.already have an idea of what you are reading
! Time Management -5

This is very key! The IELTS reading task is 60 minutes long and
.there are three questions for you to answer

Do NOT share time equally so that you allocate each question

.twenty minutes

The IELTS standard works with an increasing difficulty that

means the last question difficulty level will be higher than the
last two so make sure that you’ll have close to thirty minutes for
.the last question
! Spelling mistakes will always count -6

Try as much as possible to check on your spelling when

you are writing short answers and if you get time
after answering all the questions then check once
.again in case you made any spelling error
