PRIMAVERA P6
Primavera P6 is an Oracle software product designed for Project, Program, and Portfolio
Management. It is a powerful, easy to use solution for Planning, managing and executing
projects and programs.

The original company name is Primavera Systems and was established in 1983 by Joel
Koppleman and Dick Faris in Philadelphia, USA. Oracle bought Primavera, turning it into
the Primavera Global Business Unit. It mainly has 2 Versions

1.Primavera P6 Professional

2.Primavera P6 EPPM
Project
In body of Knowledge, A Project is a temporary endeavour undertaken to create a unique product, service, or
result.
Ex: 1. Construction of Residential Building.
2. Software Development
3.Cattering

Project Management
Project Management is the application of Knowledge, skills, tools, and technique to Project activities in order
to meet or exceed stakeholder needs and expectations from a Project.
The purpose of project management is prediction and prevention, NOT recognition and reaction.
Primavera P6 Project Management life Cycle
Primavera P6 Management includes Planning, securing,
organising, and managing the Activities and Resources which
are required to complete the Project on time within the Budget.
The five phases of Primavera P6 Management Life Cycle are
1. Initiation
2. Planning
3. Execution
4. Controlling
5. Closing
1.Initiation
Primavera PMLC’s initial step involves the initial start-up Project processes. The Project’s
scope and purpose are defined and implemented in this stage.
1. Appointing Managers and Team Members
2. Studying Project Feasibility
3. Documentation Collection

2.Planning
Planning is the critical phase in entire PMLC. Here, the documents are finalized in Primavera P6 software and are
provided to complete the Project. The Project Planning involves the creation of following plans:
1.The Project Plan
2.Resource Plan
3.Financial Plan
4.Quality Plan
5.Acceptance and Communication Plan
The Planning phase in Primavera P6 is started by creating a Work breakdown Structure,
Designing a Schedule for Cost load, assigning Project Resources, and Baseline Establishment.

3.Execution
The Execution phase is where the work is started and completed in PMLC. After setting project
plans, construction beings, and the process compared against the baseline throughout the project
building. The Primavera P6 software is used in the sequences as follows:
 To report work in process

 To schedule the status

 To compare between projected and actual cost

 To distinguish between expected resource usage and actual resource usage
4.Control
The control phase in PMLC is where the project team members look at the results and decide
whether it is on the proper track or behind. Using Primavera P6,Project members will compare
baseline schedules and actual plans and then make a recommendation to improve the project’s
health. If the project is behind Schedule, Primavera P6 is used to rectify it.

5.Closing
 The Closing is the final phase in PMLC, the primary functions in this phase are

 Learning project team members document lessons

 Determine whether the project is a baseline for other projects

 Deliver the end product to the stakeholders
Structuring Projects in Primavera P6
1. Setting-up and Define EPS.
2. Adding a Project to the EPS hierarchy.
3. Defining WBS to a Project.
4. Defining OBS.
5. Defining Resources.
6. Create Calendar for Activities and Resources.
7. Add Activities to WBS.
8. Input Activity details.
9. Schedule Project.
10. Updating Progress after Project starts.
11. Preview/ Print reports.
Enterprise Project Structure
The EPS (Enterprise Project Structure) is a logical, meaningful, hierarchical arrangement of all
the projects in your organization. This is a view of the company showing its areas of operations.

 EPS is a hierarchical arrangement of projects in an organization.

 EPS has a Main/Root Node (The Enterprise/Organization) and several Nodes and
Sub-Nodes defining the various fields this Enterprise is involved in.
 Once defined, the EPS does not change dramatically or frequently. It only needs
suitable modifications sometimes.
 The EPS is available to all existing and future projects in the Enterprise.
Work Breakdown Structure
The WBS is a hierarchical decomposition of the total scope of work to be carried
out by the project team to accomplish the project objectives and create the required
deliverables.
Create WBS is the process of subdividing project deliverables and project work into
smaller, more manageable components. The key benefit of this process is that it
provides a framework of what has to be delivered
The planned work is contained within the lowest level of WBS components, which
are called work packages.
A work package can be used to group the activities where work is scheduled and
estimated, monitored, and controlled.
Project Schedule Management
Project Schedule Management includes the processes required to manage the timely completion
of the project.

The Project Schedule Management processes are:

 Plan Schedule Management

 Define Activities
 Sequence Activities
 Estimate Activity Durations
 Develop Schedule
 Control Schedule

ACTIVITIES
Activities represents Work to be done in order to complete a project. An activity is
logical element that can occur independently or depend on others.
Primavera P6 Provides six types of activities which helps to calculate and determine
the start and finish of activity.

1. Task-Dependent
2. Resource Dependent
3. Start Milestone
4. Finish Milestone
5. Level of Effort
6. WBS Summary
Activity Relationship
There are four types of relationships in Primavera P6
1.Finish to Start(FS)
2.Start to Start(SS)
3.Finish to Finish(FF)
4.Start to Finish(SF)

Resources
Anything that is required to perform a activity is called Resource.
There are three types of resources in Primavera P6
1.Labour
2.Non-Labour
3.Materials
Develop Schedule
Develop Schedule is the process of analysing activity sequences, duration, resources
requirements, and schedule model for Project execution, monitoring and controlling.

Schedule Network analysis is the overarching technique used to generate the Project schedule
model. Techniques used are:

1.Critical Path Method

Critical Activities

Critical Path

2.Resource Optimization
Conclusion
On the Whole, the internship was a useful experience. I have gained new Knowledge,
Skill. Related to my study I have learned how to do Schedule Management, Resource
Management, Cost Management using Primavera P6 Software. At last, this internship
has given me new insights and motivation to pursue a career in Project Management.
