Tonsillites
Tonsillites is the inflammation of tonsils.
Tonsils are two small masses of tissue at back side of throat.
Tonsils act as filters, trapping germs that can otherwise enter
into your airway and can cause infection. These also make
antibodies to fight against infection , as it is composed of
tissue similar to lymph nodes.
Tonsillites are common especially in children.
Types of tonsiliitis.
1. Acute tonsillitis .
2. Recurrent tonsilitis.
3. Chronic tonsillitis.
4. Peritonsillar absess.
Etiology
Important cause of tonsillitis is streptococcus . Most common is Group
A beta streptococci. It can be caused by viral illness like glandular fever
or micronucleosis or it can be caused by some other viruses like EBV ,
CMV , Adenovirus etc.
Pathophysiology
As bacteria or viruses enter into mouth or nose.
TONSILLITIS
Clinical manifestations
Swelling and pain in throat.
Difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia).
Reffered pain to ears.
Fever and chills due to infection.
Stiff neck.
Blalitosis ( bad breath).
Diagnostic tests.
History taking.
Physical examination: we will do inspection, by inspecting inflamed
tonsils. We will do palpation to check increased size of tonsils.
