INTRODUCTION
 Brick Masonry
Brick masonry are made of brick units bonded together
with mortar.

Two essential component are:

1. Bricks 2. Mortar

• Different types of mortar

a. Cement mortar
b. Mud mortar
c. Lime mortar
d. Cement-lime mortar
e. Lime-surkhi mortar
TYPES OF BRICKS:
i. Traditional bricks – are not standardized in size.
Nominal size of the brick : 23cmx11.4cmx7.6cm

ii. Modular bricks - As per code, size of the brick

20cmx10cmx10cm(19cmx9cmx9cm)

Classes of bricks:
i. First class bricks
ii.Second class bricks
iii.Third class bricks
BONDS OF BRICKS:

Bond is the interlacement of bricks, formed

when they lay those immediately below or above
them. It help in distributing the concentrated loads
over a larger area.

Rules for bonding

1. The brick should be of uniform shape.
2. The stretcher should be used only in facing.
3. Hearting should be done in header only
TYPES OF BONDS:

1. Stretcher bond
2. Header bond
3. English bond
4. Flemish bond
5. English cross bond
6. Zigzag bond
STRETCHER BOND:
All the bricks are laid as stretchers on the
faces of walls. The length of the brick are thus
along the direction of the wall.
HEADER BOND:
All the bricks are laid as headers on the faces
of walls. The width of brick are thus along the
direction of the wall.
ENGLISH BOND:
Bond consists of alternative courses of
headers and stretchers. It is considered to be the
strongest.
FLEMISH BOND:

Each course is comprised of alternative

headers and stretchers
ENGLISH CROSS BOND
This is a modification of English bond. This
bond combines the beauty and strength.
ZIGZAG BOND
The bricks are laid in zigzag fashion used for making
ornamental panels in brick flooring.
DEFECTS IN BRICK MASONRY:

Brick masonry may develop the defects due to the

following reasons :

 Sulphate attack
 Efflorescence i.e. Crystallization of salts from
bricks
 Corrosion of embedded fixtures
 Drying shrinkage
STRENGTH OF BRICK MASONRY

The strength of brick masonry depends

upon the following factors:

1. Types and qualities of bricks

2. Mortar mix proportions
3. Size and shape of masonry construction
SUPERVISION OF BRICK MASONRY:

 The brick should be properly laid on their

bed.
 Bricks should be soaked in water before use.
 Brick work should carry perfectly in line.
 Ends or corners of the wall should be
constructed first.
 It should be raised uniformly.
 It should be perfectly in level.
 After construction, the brick work should be
kept wet for one to two weeks.
