QUADRAT

FACTORING POLYNOMIALS

IC
TRINOMI
ALS
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the presentation, you will be able
to:
• factor completely quadratic trinomials (x 2 +
bx + c)
• factor completely quadratic trinomials (ax 2 +
bx + c)
FACTORING
POLYNOMIALS
QUADRATIC TRINOMIALS
KEEP THIS IN
MIND…
If the coefficient or constant is not a
perfect square, it cannot be factored into
a square of a binomial. However, it can
be factored into a product of two
different binomials.
FOIL method
x
2 + 4x + 3x + 12
(x + 3)(x + 4) = x + 4x + 3x + 12
2

= x + 7x + 12

HOW CAN WE EASILY FACTOR
OUT THESE KINDS OF
TRINOMIALS?
1. List all pairs of integers whose product is
c.
2. Choose a pair, m and n, whose sum is b.
x + bx + c = (x + m)(x + n)
2

Note: If there are no integers m and n that will be equal to b, then the trinomial is
cannot be factored and considered as prime.
FOR EXAMPLE...
Factor the following if possible.

a) x2 + 10x + 16 c) x2 – 2x – 24

b) x2 – 9x + 18 d) x2 + 3x + 3

KEEP THIS IN
MIND…
The process of factoring these
trinomials is similar to factoring x2 + bx
+ c, but this involves the trial-and-error
method.
HOW CAN WE EASILY FACTOR OUT
THESE KINDS OF TRINOMIALS?
1. List all pairs of integers whose product is equal
to ac.
2. Choose a pair, m and n, whose sum is b.
3. Rewrite the middle term as the sum or
difference using the pair in step 2.
FOR EXAMPLE...
Factor the following if possible.

a) 2x2 + 15x + 28 c) 9x2 – 12x – 5

b) 6x2 – x – 15 d) 4x2 + 13x + 3
