Poster Analysis

“Wilting Flower”
The title of the film can
relate to one of the
scenes within the film,
where there is the use of
stop motion picture to
capture the wilting of a
yellow rose. It can also
connect to the concept
of the description of the
main character. Being
that the protagonist is
wilting and giving up
hope throughout the
duration of the film. It
also supports the main
image used for the
poster.
The typography
specifically chosen
for the title of the
film was specifically
designed to
reinforce it. The
thin and italic
writing can connote
instability and the
fragility of the main
character. It can
also reinforce the
delicate flower used
as the main image of
the poster. Due to
films artistic theme,
this font can
reinforce and
emphasise it to the
audience.
The colour of the font
used was designed to
represent the
innocence of the main
character and to
indicate that she had
actually done nothing
wrong.
The light and plain
appearance meant that
it did not heavily
overcast the rest of the
poster, but that it
instead created an
effective juxtaposition
with the dark
background, enabling
it to stand out and be
easily read by viewers.
This was not initially
one of the aspects
which I thought was
important on
independent film
posters. However,
when considering
the research I
carried out on what
my Target Market
group, and how they
are influences by
reviews when going
to see a film, I
though that these
reviews would be
important factor
which could be used
to sell the film to
them.
Including “A Helen
Chamberlain Film” on
the poster, can be used
as a form of
advertisement for later
films. It indicates to
the audience who
made the film. I made
the conscious decision
of not including the
names of the actors
involved within the
film. This was because
the actresses starring,
were unknown and it
would therefore be
ineffective to use them
as a selling point on
the poster.
I have included the
symbol for
Whitestone Motion
Picture. The reason
for this was because
my short film would
be released with that
film company, so
going by my research
I would need to
include it for legal
reasons. On the other
hand, it could be
used as an effective
selling feature of my
film. Due to their
global success, it
means that more
people would be
likely to watch my
short film.
I have decided not to use the
main cast as the image for my
poster. Although this is not
common, and could contrast
normal advertising posters, I
think that this is an effective
image to use.
I decided not to use the cast as
the image on the poster as they
are not established actors. It
would therefore not be effective
to use it as a selling point on the
poster, I instead went with the
artistic approach and
incorporated symbolism from
my film into the poster. This
might thus create more ‘hype’
on the film due to artistic ideas.
Additionally, in my Target
Market research (audience)
they liked shirt films to be
artistic.
My decision on not using the
cast can also relate to the
research carried out on short
film posters. In particular,
Whitestone Motion Pictures,
short film, “The Candy Shop”.
This was an effective poster
and really emphasised the
symbolism within the film.
The poster for this short film
is situated below.
I decided to keep the
background of the
poster very simple.
This was so that the
main image (yellow
flower) had a greater
contrast. It also made
the poster more
aesthetically effective
and professional.
Within the poster there
is the hint of light
which was created
through the artificial
light when the picture
was taken. I think that
it makes the poster
more effective and also
does not make the
background look like a
block colour.
When deciding what
colour to use for the
flower, I referenced the
colour chart which I had
created when I carried
out research for my
short film, poster and
review. Upon this, I
decided to use the
colour yellow because
although it has many
positive connotations, it
can also connote decay
and vulnerability. These
are both ideal meanings
which cohere perfectly
with the character and
the emotions she
portrays.
The background colour
was chosen for it darker
qualities. It was the
background for the
picture taken, but was
enhanced and darkened
to make it more effective.
It is actually a dark
brown, but can appear
black. By being dark
brown, it creates and
enhance the yellow
flower, but is not to
dramatic where it ruins
the poster. It also boosts
the written on the page
which is ideal as it means
the audiences attention is
drawn to the writing and
information presented
within the poster about
the film.
If there were to be one
point which I could have
included, would be the use
of a tag line. The reason
that I did not originally
include one was for both
aesthetical and linguistic
reasons. When I included
one, I did not think that
particularly added
anything and the
negatives (poster’s
appearance) outweighed
the positive on having it
included within the
poster. As a result, I
decided not to include
one. However in
retrospect, it would have
been ideal to have used
one.
With this poster, I have
included all of the necessary
points which I discovered
when I annotated pre-
existing film posters,
including “Secret Window”,
“The Brothers Grimm,” and
“The Imaginarium of Doctor
Parnassus”.

The overall effect of the

poster is effective. Even
though it is simple, I believe
that it conveys the film well,
especially through the use of
the flower and the title
matching it.
