ACTION RESEARCH

The Effects of Conscious – Raising (CR)

Method on the Language of Pupils in
Composition Writing
What is conscious-raising (CR)
method?
1. The `attempt to isolate a specific
linguistic feature for focussed
attention'. i.e: verbs
2. The learners 'utilize intellectual
effort' to understand the targeted
feature i.e using the right forms of
verbs
- Ellis (1993)

Adapted from: http://www.willis-elt.co.uk/documents/7c-r.doc.

CR activity we focussed on

• Identify / consolidate
– Students are asked to
search a set of grammar
feature (verb) and to
identify a particular pattern
or usage in their writing
Rationale
• Observed a recurring mistake student makes:
– Wrong use of verbs
• Do not make effort to proof-read their writing,
marks deducted
• Hope to raise pupils awareness in the
grammatical features of the language item
• To improve overall compo marks
Objectives

This research aims to find out

how effective is the
conscious- raising method on
the language of pupils in
composition writing

Students are taught to

identify verbs + underline
+ correct mistakes

• Brainstorm
• Write compo in class
•Assess sample of HA MA LA
•Marked by other Pri 3 teachers

Findings

1. INCREASE in marks however not significant

 Some students were not able to identify the
verbs
2. Students responded positively
3. More aware of learning process
Findings

Improvement in other areas of:

1. Awareness in the grammar they used
2. Instill habit of checking through practice
3. Develop High potential in success of method as
it becomes a good habit
4. Develops SEL : good interpersonal skills when
peer checking
5. Encourage self-directed learning
Areas for improvement
1. LA students have peer to check & self
edit
2. Demonstrate the process / instructions
(visually)
• Show sample of student’s work and edit
3. Cut-down on work process
• Comparison could be done with one class
4. Data analysis focussed on language item
Recommendations
1. Use for any other grammar item
1. Parts of speech, adjective, verb
noun
2. Use to improve compo at higher
level
3. Use in context ( text, text type
etc)
4. At higher level used for mastery
of Grammar
CONSCIOUS-RAISING
In a nutshell, :
Making learners notice the targeted
grammatical patterns,
which then leads to learning them
