OBJECTIVE

• To increase the overall heat transfer coefficient and to find

effectiveness in double cross flow shell and tube heat
exchanger and comparing them with staggered type shell and
tube heat exchanger.
• To simulate the fluid flow and heat transfer in staggered
type and double cross flow heat exchanger using CFD and to
investigate pressure drop, velocity distribution and
temperature distribution.
INTRODUCTION

Heat exchanger is a device that is used to transfer

thermal energy between two or more fluids.

Heat exchangers are of two types:-

1. Where both media between which heat is exchanged are in
direct contact with each other is Direct contact heat exchanger,
2. Where both media are separated by a wall through which heat
is transferred so that they never mix, indirect contact heat
exchanger.

• Material selection
• Design features
• Tube diameter
• Shell cross section and its dimensions
• No. of sets of tubes
• Type of insulation provided
• Shell length
• Tube length

DIMENSIONS OF HEAT EXCHANGER

SHELL:
• Material –mild steel
• Length -100cm
• Height -15x15 cm
• Coating –aluminium
TUBE:
• Material –copper
• Diameter -12mm
• Bent radii – 50 mm
• Length – 250 mm

10
Work done
The experimental setup is assembled and shown below.
We are analysing the parameters like pressure drop, no
of thermocouples going to use

11
The assembled experimental setup of the model consists
of
• Heat exchanger
• Water reservoir
• Sink
• Air Compressor
• Connecting hoses
• Thermocouples
• Data logger
•Computer system (to record the data)
12
Working

• When hot air is passed through shell, heat is transferred from

air to water passing through the tubes.
• Inlet and outlet temperatures are measured with the help of
thermocouples.
• Pressure drop between inlet and outlet of the heat exchanger is
measured.

13
Future Work

 Choosing the process parameters to be evaluated.

 Conducting the experiment and find out the values.
 Comparing these values into previous values and to decide the
future work on it .
