SLOPE DEFLECTION METHOD
INTRODUCTION
The slope deflection method was first presented
by prof. George A. maney 1915 of the university
of minnesota. the rotation of the joints are
treated as unknowns.

With the introduction of the versatile method of

moment distribution . the use of slope deflection
has become obsolete.
INTRODUCTION
however the study of this method is
useful for the following reasons.
It provides an excellent back ground for the study of
moment distribution method.
It also provides an effective background for the
study of matrix methods of structural analysis.
The slope and deflections of the joints are actually
found out.
ASSUMPTION IN THE SLOPE
DEFLECTION

This method is based on the

following simplified assumptions.
1-Allthe joints of the frame are rigid, i.e, the
angle between the members at the joints do not
change, when the members of frame are
loaded.
2-Distortion, due to axial and shear stresses,
being very small, are neglected.
SIGN CONVENTION
Support moments :
Clockwise moment= +Ve
Anticlockwise moment = -Ve
Rotation :
Clockwise rotation = +Ve
Anticlockwise rotation= -Ve
SLOPE DEFLECTION EQUATION
EXAMPLES
Analyze the two span continuous beam ABC by
slope deflection method . Take EI constant.
