Success and Failure Factors
in Advancing and
Mainstreaming the
Cooperative System
There should be a continuing effort to cultivate
appropriate cooperative values
AT THE COOP MGT. LEVEL
● Avoiding misinterpretations in any form, e.g. weight, quality and
cost.
● Transparent with complete disclosure at all times.
● Serving as a role model to its members.
● Financially Prudent
● Giving what is due to others and overcome destructive
competition.
● Encouraging and promoting viable livelihood projects and self
help activities among its membership.
● Being Forward-looking, innovative and dynamic
AT THE PERSONAL (MEMBERSHIP) LEVEL
• Doing away with the “crab-mentality”
• Taking interest and active participation in all activities.
• Demonstrating loyalty to the cooperative.
• Patronizing and supporting all coop business
undertakings and projects.
• Being constantly well informed in all coop matters
• Undertaking viable livelihood projects and self-help
activities.
• Practicing and cultivating the value of honoring
pledges/ promises.
Dedicated Leadership and Effective management

● An important factor in the success of a cooperative is the


presence of capable and dedicated leaders.
● Must promote more activities membership participation.
● Competent leaders will give proper guidance to avoid
outside control and manipulation.
Board of Directors

• Many cooperatives have failed mainly because its funds were


used by their treasurers for personal interests or borrowed by
the members of the board of directors and never paid.
• There is always the danger related to handling coop-money.
• It is the task of the members to elect the people whom they can
trust to lead and manage the cooperative’s business.
• Leaders, especially the Board of Directors, must be chosen on
the basis of good business judgement and proven ability, and
not on friendship and favorable financial standing in the
community.
Members of the board should….
● Represent the common interest and genuine welfare of the members.
● Consistently patronize their co-op’s services and refrain from engaging in competing
businesses.
● Assume the role models for capital build-up, savings, transparency, and honoring
promises, pledges and contracts.
● Help disseminate information on membership rights, duties and responsibilities in order
to gain strong membership support and cooperation.
● Spend cooperative money as carefully as they would spend their own.
● Managed financial operations with a well studied/ rewarded and approved operating
budget.
● Be able to analyze and consider problems.
● Select employees based on appropriate qualifications.
Management Officers and Staff
● Audit process should be welcomed to assure the members that their
interests (funds/property) are properly spent and adequate protected
● Submit frequent audits. The financial records should be checked
regularly.
● Transparency
● Receipts should be issued, transactions should be properly recorded,
all expenditures must be supported with invoices or vouchers.
● Having open mind, willing to adopt new ideas
● Maintain good record keeping. Minutes of the meetings, records of the
membership, similar documents must be properly filed and maintained.
MEMBERS (Committed)
• Take active interest in voting and in other
important matters during the meetings.
• Demonstrate loyalty.
• Be responsible, meet your obligations.
• Patronize the coop
• Help to maintain the co-op’s sound financial
structure and performance.
• Actively recruit more members to help
increase volume of business and capital.
Continuing Cooperative Education
● Membership seminars should be conducted to keep them informed of
their services, new policies, plans and ongoing activities and projects.
● Board of directors should be able to develop plans and programs and
formulate sound policies appropriate for their implementation and
efficient operation.
● Specialized training for officers and management staff to perform their
duties well.
● Build sustainability.
