Illustrates Quadratic Equation (M9AL-la-1)

WHAT IS QUADRATIC EQUATION?
The name Quadratic comes from "quad" meaning square,
because the variable gets squared (like x2).
It is also called an "Equation of Degree 2" (because of the "2"
on the x)

Quadratic equation is also known as Second Degree

Equation because the highest power of the variable is 2.

x +3x-18=0
2 2x-1=0 x
x +2x -8x=0
3 2 x
The standard form of Quadratic Equation is

ax + bx + c = o
2

with a, b and c are real numbers and

a≠0 and x is an unknown variable.
The standard form of Quadratic Equation is
Quadratic Term Linear Term Constant Term

ax + bx + c = o
2
with a, b and c are real numbers and
a≠0 and x is an unknown variable.
Quadratic Equations in Standard Form

x + 2x - 12 = o
2

a=1 b=2 c = -12

NOTE:
Variables with no
numbers have
coefficients of 1
Quadratic Equations in Standard Form

2x - 32x + 31 = o
2

a=2 b = -32 c = 31
Quadratic Equations lacking the linear term or the “bx”

ax + c = 0
2
therefore b = 0

3x + 13 = o
2

a=3 c = 13
b=0
Quadratic Equations lacking the linear term or the “bx”

-4x + 7 = o
2

a = -4 c=7

b=0
Quadratic Equations lacking the constant term or the “c”

ax + b = 0
2
therefore c = 0

2x + 3x = o
2

a=2 b=3

c=o
Quadratic Equations in Factored Form

(x+4)(x-9) = 0
FOIL METHOD
A mnemonic for the standard method in multiplying binomials.
Quadratic Equations in Factored Form

FOIL METHOD
FIRST
First – (x)(x) = x2
Last
Outer – (x)( -9) = -9x
Inner – (4)(x) = 4x
Last – (4)(-9) = -36

(x+4)(x-9) = 0
x2 -9x + 4x – 36 = 0
Inner
x2 – 5x – 36 = 0
Outer
Quadratic Equations in Factored Form

(x+4)(x-9) = 0

x – 5x – 36 = 0
2

a=1 b = -5 c = - 36
Quadratic Equations that are NOT in Factored Form

Expand the terms on the left

of the equation by
multiplying 3x with 2x and - 5

3x(2x – 5) = 3
3x(2x) + 3x(-5) = 3
6x + (-15x) = 3
2

6x2 – 15x = 3
6x – 15x - 3 = 3 - 3
2

6x – 15x – 3 = 0
2
Quadratic Equations that are NOT in Factored Form

3x(2x – 5) = 3

6x – 15x – 3 = 0
2
a=6 b = -15 c=-3
