Boiling Point of a

Mixture

Quarter 1 – Module 13
Distinguish mixtures from substances
based on a set of properties
(S7MT-Ie-f-4)
At the end of the module,
you should be able to:
• Define boiling point
• Describe the boiling
point of a mixture
• Illustrate the boiling
point of a mixture
Directions: Identify what is
asked or described in each
item then write the letter of
the best answer.

1. Which of the following

choices below is NOT an
example of a mixture?
a. air
b. orange juice
c. stainless steel
d. table salt
2. When the liquid starts
bubbling up after being
heated, the pressure of the
atmosphere becomes equal
to the pressure of the vapour
from the liquid. When this
happens, the liquid is
described as _____.
a. boiling
b. evaporating
c. heating
d. melting
3. The pressure exerted by a body
of water against the air is called
_____ pressure.
a. air
b. atmosphere
c. low
d. vapor

4. A mixture boils at ____

a. a sharp temperature
b. a range of temperature
c. decreasing temperature.
d. an increasing temperature.
5. Water boils at 100°C at
1 atm. If 116 g sodium
chloride (table salt) is
added, its boiling
temperature will be
_____.
a. 98°C
b. 100°C
c. 101°C
d. any of these

GUIDE QUESTIONS
• What type of matter did we use in the
experiment?
• What process/es did we apply to the
experiment?
• How was the set-up different?
• What evidence can we look into to
say that a set-up is boiling?
• What is the boiling point of water at
sea level?
• What happened to the boiling point of
water after mixing it with table salt?

DOES THE COMPONENTS AFFECT THE BOILING POINT OF A MATTER?

Air
• is a gas
• particles are separated far away
from each other compared to
particles of solid and liquid
• However, these particles are
always moving that they always
collide with each other
WHAT PULLS DOWN AIR PARTICLES CAUSING IT TO COLLIDE WITH WATER
PARTICLES ON EARTH?

THIS IS CALLED ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE

• The more collision
occurring between air
and water particles, the
higher the pressure.
• Just like air particles, water
particles move and collide with
each other, too. When water is
heated, some of its particles get
“excited” or gain energy making
it vibrate faster than other
particles. When a water particle
vibrates too fast, it leaves the
liquid as a water vapor. As the
water vapor rises, it collides
with the air particles above it.
This collision between air and
water particles creates vapor
pressure. This phenomena
reduces the atmospheric
pressure experienced by the
water.
• A liquid is boiling if it is
rapidly turning into vapor
when heated at its
boiling point. Boiling
point is the temperature
by which the vapor
pressure of the liquid is
equal to the atmospheric
pressure exerted into it.
• Each component of a
mixture has its own
boiling point. However,
when a component is
mixed with another, the
boiling point of the
mixture may be
different from the
boiling point of each
respective component
• A mixture boils at a
range of temperature.
The boiling point
depends on the
identity of the
mixture’s components
since each component
retains its chemical
property.
EVALUATE
Tell whether the following
mixtures are homogeneous or
heterogeneous. Write HO for
Homogeneous and HE for
heterogeneous.
1. Ginatan
2. Coke
3. Soy sauce
4. Oil and water solution
5. Ding-dong
Alternative response:
Write T if the statement
is TRUE and F if not.
6. Boiling occurs when the atmospheric
pressure and vapor pressure is unequal.
7. Pressure increases with altitude or
height.
8. A mixture boils at a range of
temperature
9. The boiling point depends on the
identity of the mixture’s components
since each component retains its
chemical property.
10. The more collision occurring
between air and water particles, the
higher the pressure.
Extend
Ethyl alcohol, also called
ethanol, is usually used for
sanitizing our hands or
disinfecting any surfaces in
our house. Its boiling point is
78.37°C. Will its boiling point
be higher during May when it
is summer compared to its
boiling point in December
when it is rainy? Why or why
not?
