CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background

Reading is one of the skills that students need to master


in learning English. Reading is written text that can be
looked at and understood.
Students Problem

Reading comprehension of the students at MTsN 1 Kota


Palu still poor.
REAP STRATEGY

REAP is an acronym for Read, Encode, Annotate, and


Ponder. REAP strategy as the strategy to improve students’
reading comprehension. REAP is a strategy for helping
students read and understand a text.
Problem Statement

Is there any significant difference in reading


comprehension between students who are taught
without and with using REAP strategy?
Objective of the Research

The objective of this research is to find out the ability of


the eight-grade students of MTsN 1 Kota Palu in
reading comprehension by using REAP strategy.

Reading comprehension
Oakhill, et al., (2015:1) states, Reading comprehension is
important, not just for understanding text, but for broader learning,
success in education, and employment. It is even important for our
social lives, because of email, text, and social networking sites.
Reading comprehension is a complex task, which requires the
orchestration of many different cognitive skills and abilities.
Narrative Text
According to Rebecca (2003) “narrative text is a text,which relates
a series of logically and chronologically related events that are
caused or experienced by factors’’.
REAP STRATEGY

REAP (Read, Encode, Annotate, and Ponder) is a teaching


method developed by M.G Eanet& A.V. Manzo. REAP is
designed to improve thinking in reading and meaningful writing.
This strategy asks students to return the text several times as they
go through the REAP process.

According to Fadhli (2015) states that REAP primarily is a


cognitive-improvement approach that teacher students to think
more accurately and deeply about what they read
Hyphothesis

Based on the theoretical framework, the researcher


stated the hypothesis:
The implementation of REAP strategy can improve
the reading comprehension of eighth-grade students
at MTsN 1 Kota Palu.
CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHOD

Research Design
The researcher will implement quasi-experimental research
design which is proposed by Sugiyono (2015:116) as follow:

Experimental group: O1 X O2
Control group : O3 – O4
Population and Sample

Population
The population of this research is the eighth grade of
MTsN 1 Kota

Sample
The researcher will choose two classes as the sample by
applying the purposive sampling technique.
Procedures of Data Collection
