Problems of Original Design

1. It is quite difficult for the construction works to install the new drainage pipe
at the same location of the original drainage pipe.
2. It is required to divert the water of the original drainage pipe by another
route during the construction works.
3. It is required to consider the construction method to install the new drainage
pipe by removing the existing drainage pipe.
4. The HDPE Pipe shall be installed by the crane after excavating the ground.
However, it is impossible to excavate the ground since the existing drainage
pipe was installed under the residential area.

Solution

a. Accordingly, the New Drainage Pipe shall be installed at the Different Bypass
Route.
b. The New Drainage Pipe shall be installed by the Tunneling Construction
Method.

Necessary Conditions for Our Proposal

1. It is required for the area to be installed the new drainage pipe to allow the
permanent land use. ⇒ It shall be required for the land Acquisition.
2. It is necessary to secure the temporary working yard at the upstream of the
construction site for the installation of HDPE of 3.0m diameter.
( According to the given photo of the site, it seems that the existing creek
width is less than 3.0m.)
3. It is required for the ground works during the construction to be provided
a proper space for the works temporarily.
4. It shall be required to conduct the Fore-Piling Support for the Tunnel
Works to avoid the Cave-In during the construction, if the Overburden
above the Tunnel is less, after considering the Soil Boring Test Result it may
be necessary for the whole stretch of the Tunnel for securing the Safety.
5. It is definitely required to carry out the geological survey works such as in-
site boring test along the proposed tunnel route since the past obtained
geological data is at the different place.
Plan of Existing Underdrainage 16
Are there any houses on the line of existing underdrainage?
Alternative Construction Method 17

Depending on the soil condition of the tunnel route, it may be applicable for the Mud
Density Slurry Balance Type Pipe Jacking Method. This construction method is quite safe
for the adjacent ground and structures since the cutter face is a closed type and no
intrusion of the excavated soils into the Hume Pipe is expected. The Project is required
definitely to secure the safety by minimizing the displacement of the ground as the
installation of the Hume Pipe is planned under the residential area
If the above method can be applicable for this Project, it is most recommendable from the
viewpoint of Safety and Cost Effectiveness since the Construction Period and Cost could be
almost equal to the previously presented the Two construction methods

Mud Density Slurry Balance Type

Pipe Jacking Method Image of Neighboring Construction
  Diameter : Φ2,200 x 2 line
  Soil type : Cohesive soil
Remarks : Need for keeping the Pressure for Mud Slurry

The Pipe Diameter shall be required a smaller one from the

viewpoint of Displacement of the ground and Procurement of the
Equipment.

This Construction Method is most recommendable for the Project

considering the Economic Balance and Construction Period.
