WHY IBSE?
• Before 1900, most educators viewed science primarily as a
body of knowledge that students were to learn through
direct instruction.

1909 (John Dewey)


One criticism of this perspective contended that:
“science teaching gave too much emphasis to the accumulation
of information and not enough to science as a way of thinking
and an attitude of mind”

Science is more than a body of knowledge to be learned,

• A rough translation: "Not hearing is not as good as hearing, hearing is not
as good as seeing, seeing is not as good as knowing, knowing is not as
good as acting; true learning continues until it is put into action.“

• 没听见不如听见,听见不如看见,看见不如了解,了解了不如去实
行。 讲的是学习要广闻博见,深入探讨,最后要把学到的知识付诸
实践。

Inquiry-Based Science Education

IBSE means students progressively developing key scientific ideas through learning
how to investigate and build their knowledge and understanding of the world
around. They use skills employed by scientists such as raising questions, collecting
data, reasoning and reviewing evidence in the light of what is already known,
drawing conclusions and discussing results. This learning process is all supported by
an inquiry-based pedagogy, where pedagogy is taken to mean not only the act of
teaching but also its underpinning justifications.

Goals
Through their science education students should develop:

Understanding of fundamental scientific ideas


Understanding of the nature of science, scientific inquiry, reasoning
Scientific competences of gathering and using evidence
Scientific attitudes, both attitudes within science and towards science
Skills that support learning throughout life
Ability to communicate using appropriate language and representations,
including written, oral and mathematical language
Appreciation of the contribution of science to society and of how science is
used in technology and engineering.

Advances in science offer new capabilities, new materials, or new

Advances in technology, in turn, provide scientists with new
T capabilities to probe the natural world at larger or smaller scales; to
record, manage, and analyze data; and to model ever more complex
systems with greater precision.
In addition, engineers’ efforts to develop or improve technologies
E often raise new questions for scientists’ investigations.

forms and warranted through logical argument.

…We use the term “engineering” in a very broad sense to mean any
engagement in a systematic practice of design to achieve solutions to
particular human problems.

Likewise, we broadly use the term “technology” to include all types of


T human-made systems and processes—not in the limited sense often used in
schools that equates technology with modern computational and
communications devices.
Technologies result when engineers apply their understanding of the
natural world and of human behavior to design ways to satisfy human
needs and wants.
