ORTHODONTIC

BRACES

APPLICATIONS AND WORKING PRINCIPLE

• Dental supports (otherwise called supports, orthodontic cases, or cases) are gadgets
utilized in orthodontics that adjust and fix teeth and help position them as to an
individual's chomp.
• Braces apply continuous pressure to straighten out your teeth.
• Pressure from braces loosens the tissue surrounding misaligned teeth which are then
stretched into the loosened socket.
• Once the tooth starts moving into the loosened socket the bone of the tooth will fill
around it and solidifying the new position of the tooth
PROPERTIES NEEDED

• High Tensile Strength

• Good Ductility
• Corrosion Resistant
• Shape Memory
• Stress Resistant
• Elasticity
PRESENT MARKET MATERIAL AND
MODIFICATION
• For the traditional dental braces which are most widely used, they are
made from high grade stainless steel. Stainless steels are alloy steel.
• Contain minimum 10.5% chromium, carbon and iron.
• Traditionally in market every component is made of Stainless Steel
• In this product we will use different materials according to their
specific Application.
• Components of Dental Braces-: Bands, Brackets, Arch wire, Rubber
Bands, Ligatures, coil spring, Power chain
CONT’D

• Nowadays people do not like these traditional braces because of looks.

• In this product brackets can be made of clear materials for this we will use ceramic
which can even use in reduced sourness.
• One of the major component of braces is arch wire, which is traditionally made of
steel but it is been found difficult to wear instead Cu-Ni-Ti Alloys are more suitable as
they proved to fulfil the properties like shape Memory, stress resistant.
• Rubber that is used in braces should be latex.
NEED OF MODIFICATION

• Its natural to expect that arc wires should not corrode.

• Passive layer in SS is composed of Fe2O3 and Cr2O3, but this corrosion resistance
barrier can also be damaged.
• Studies and SEM photographs have shown that SS is comparatively susceptible to
corrosion.
• Moreover SS have low spring back properties.
• Fluoride agents decreases the mechanical properties such as unloading yield strength and
unloading elastic modulus.
WHY CONSIDERING CU-NI-TI ALLOY?

• Material used in arc wire should exhibit biocompatibility, formability, weldability, low
coefficient of friction, resilience, shape memory, low stiffness, and high elastic limit.
• It is suggested that nickel should be present in arc wires as far as corrosion, shape
memory problem is considered.
• So Cu-Ni-Ti alloy containing 50.7% Ni, 42.4%Ti, 6.9%Cu and having super elastic
properties a better option than stainless steel.
CONT’D

• The addition of copper to the alloy enhances the thermal-reactive properties of the
wire and makes it highly resistant to permanent deformation.
• A variety of orthodontic companies claim that the copper-nickel-titanium
manufacturing process allows for the production of more consistent transition
temperatures in the wires.
• The addition of also reduces the time duration and gives more efficient tooth
movement.
