Functions of
Communication
In this chapter, you will learn the various functions
of communication. In particular, you will explore how
the regulation/control, social interaction, motivation,
information, and emotional expression functions are
utilized in different speech contexts.

1. Regulation/Control
• A function of communication which means able
to use language, gestures, and emotions to
manage individual or group activities.
Speakers purpose: to regulate or to control
• It is often used whenever people want to control
the behavior or actions of other people. Wjen
language is employed to control people’s
behavior or events (positive/negative).

Examples:
The “No Entry” sign is one example of a
regulatory/control function of communication.
A mom who just put her baby to sleep would tell her
older kids to be quiet or simply say “sshhhh”.
A student asking his/her teacher to stop teasing him/her
teacher to stop teasing him/her about having a crush.

2. Social Interaction
• Serves to establish and maintain relationships
with others. Social interactions are vital for the
existence and development of all human beings.
Speakers purpose: to socialize or to interact.
• It is the most often used, the most popular.
Occurs in verbal, usually casual and informal.

Examples:
“No man is an island”. Everyone is born with the innate
desire to belong. Regardless of your personality, you will
always be compelled to interact with others.
Making friends with other people.
Greetings.

3. Motivation
• Normally understood as the reason or cause of
people’s actions and behavior.
Speakers purpose: to encourage people to do well and
live better.
• In communication, speakers utilize the verbal
and non verbal expressions to catch their
listener’s attention, engage them, and even
challenge their way of thinking and behaving.

Examples:
A public speaking with a motivational speaker.

Using quotations like “Keep calm. God is in control. If


you believe you can, you can certainly can.”

Motivating and believing in yourself or friends.

4. Information
• Refers to the use of communication refers in
conveying facts, knowledge, or any other type of
information.
Speakers purpose: to convey information
• Information is necessary in order to avoid
uncertainly in the environment or situations
where you find your self in. Remember,
knowledge is power.

Asking someone about something or details that you
want to know.
Listening to your teacher.
Listening to a radio or television.

5. Emotional Expression
• Facilitates people’s expression of their feelings
and emotions.
Speakers purpose: to convey information
• Emotional expression is mainly utilized to
communicate your emotional experience. One of
the common ways to do this is through you
facial expressions.
