Automation
• Definition: “It is a technique of making a product, process
or a system which operate automatically” or
• “The creation and application of technology to monitor
and control the production and delivery of product &
service”
• The word Automation is coming from Greek words “Auto”
(self) and “Matos” (moving things). Automation therefore
is the mechanism for systems that “move by it”.
Automated systems also achieve significantly better
performance than what is possible with manual process, in
terms of power, precision and speed of manufacturing
process.

Types Of Automation

• Fixed Automation: It is used in large production

requirement with dedicated instruments and
machines, which has a fixed type of operation and
designed to be best use for this assembly.
Continuous production and Different Mass
Production requirement use this automation.

Types Of Automation

• Programmable Automation: It is used for a

changing assembly of production process and
configuration of the instruments and
machines using computerized controls. even
though ,some non-programming activity also
needed to reprogram the machine.

Types Of Automation

• Flexible Automation: Flexible automation

system which is directly computer controlled.
Human operators gives only command in the
form of programmed entered into computer
for specific requirement of the product and its
location in the assembly line and the short
changes are done automatically by machines.

Need of Automation
• Accuracy in process.
• Safety in operation.
• Increased productivity
• Increased quality of products.
• Reduced manual task with human errors.
• Reduced labor cost.
• Reduced manufacturing cost ,time
• Avoid wastage generations.
• Minimize utilities requirement.

Advantages Of Automation.
• Improved working environment
• Increased competitiveness, sales and profit
• No labor crisis
• Increase production capacity
• Compliance consistency
• Increased factory productivity or OEE

Disadvantages of Automation
• Capital expenditure.
• Gets rid of jobs.
• Automation becomes redundant when production
processes change.
• Required only skills persons to operating.
