HISPANIC

INFLUENCED
DANCE
Paseo, Paso Doble, Pateado or Zapateado
Paseo
- Spanish dance in 2/4 or ¾ time that emulates the
costume of promenading/strolling

- Andaluz (also called Paseo de Iloilo) is a

sophisticated courtship and flirtation dance that
originated in Iloilo at the time of Spanish
colonization. In this dance, men compete with each
other in trying to attract a young lady by showing off
their chivalry, grace, and confidence.
- Paso Doble (meaning "double-step" in Spanish) is a
dance that is also called the Spanish one-step in 2/4
time; it is danced with a single step to a beat, and with
a lot of spontaneity and free movements; the male
leads the female moving forward and backward,
turning together or singly in a circle using a variety of
hand movements and holds.

- It became a very popular and stylish ballroom dance

in the Philippines, and is at present being revived in
dancing clubs and social gatherings.

- Paso Doble folk dance of the Philippines is danced in

2/4 time with a single-step to a beat, and is danced
with a lot of spontaneity and free movements.
Paso Doble
Pateado or Zapateado
- Pateado is from the Spanish word zapateado- the famous “Spanish
Shoemaker’s Dance”.

- The Pateado is a delightful courtship dance that focuses on a single

couple’s flirting over a native hat (buri or buntal) executed into
funny but graceful dance steps.

- An interesting point in the dance is when the hat is finally snatched

by the male dancer. The female dancer would try all her means to
get the hat back but all in vain. Having all her efforts futile, the girl
will shy away and would refuse to dance anymore. The dance is
ended with the girl getting her hat back and the boy dancing happily
after the reconciliation.
