A PROGRESS TOWARDS
SOLAR CITIES
PAST HURDLES
On the domestic manufacturing front, India fares worse. Various efforts by the Solar Energy
Corporation of India (SECI) to attract bids for the development of the Inter-state Transmission
System (ISTS) connected Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Power Plant since May 2018 has been in
vain. The confusion along the GST and the import duty on solar equipment — are yet to be
resolved completely.

PRESENT ACCOMPLISHED
• Diu Smart City is a remarkable solar energy success story from India. Equipped with 9-MW
solar park spread over 50 hectares, and 79 government buildings with installed solar panels, it
has become the first city in India to run on 100% renewable energy during daytime. The city
now saves 13,000 tonnes of carbon emissions every year and has managed to reduce power
tariffs by up to 15%. India’s cumulative solar capacity, too, is steadily increasing and touched 20
GW this year.
FUTURE DEMYSTIFIED
• Across the globe, solar project developers and facility managers are switching to digital tools
simply out of necessity. Doing so is often the only way to perform essential tasks normally
reserved for human actors on the ground. What developers in India and elsewhere are quickly
discovering, however, is that digitization delivers unmatched improvements in efficiency – often
with faster and more accurate results.
STRATEGY
NATIONAL

SOLAR
The first phase will announce the broad policy frame work to
achieve the objective of the National Solar Mission by 2022.
The policy announcement will create the necessary
environment to attract industry and project developers to
invest in research, domestic manufacturing and development
of solar power generation and thus create the critical mass for
a domestic solar industry. The Mission will work closely
with State Governments, Regulators, Power utilities and
MISSION
Local Self Government bodies to ensure that the activities
and policy framework being laid out can be implemented
effectively. Since some State Governments have already
announced initiatives on solar, the Mission will draw up a
suitable transition framework to enable an early and
aggressive start-up.
