Ways of

Separating
Mixtures
Mixture
oconsists of two or more different
substances that are mixed. A mixture
can be identified easily because the
individual parts are visible. They are
combined but could easily be separated.
Examples of Mixtures

Rock-mixture of different Sandwich- mixture of

kinds of rocks bread, meat, tomato

Soda- mixture of sugar

and water
2 Types of Mixtures
The prefixes: “hetero” indicate
difference.
A heterogeneous mixture is
that which does not have the
same composition throughout,
that is, its components are not
uniformly distributed and can
be distinguished from each
other.
Examples:
Beach sand

Vinegar and oil salad dressing

The prefixes: “homo”
indicate sameness.
A homogeneous mixture
is that which has the same
composition throughout,
that is, its components are
uniformly distributed and
cannot be distinguished
from each other.
Examples:
Corn oil White vinegar
Homogeneous mixture – the substances are
found in the same phase (state of matter)
Example: salt solution, sugar solution

Heterogeneous mixture
-the individual substances may be in a
different phase or state of matter
The method of separating
the substance that make up
mixture depend on the
physical properties of the
substances.

Winnowing

Winnowing is
the process of
separating the
chaff from the
grains by wind.
Hand Picking
The solid to
solid mixture that
can be
separated by
just picking with
the help
of hand.
Sifting or Sieving

Sieving is used to
separate a dry
mixture which
contains substances
of different sizes by
passing it through a
sieve.
Sieve is a device
containing tiny
holes and
separates wanted
elements from
unwanted material.
Use of Magnet

Evaporation

Evaporation is use to  separate a mixture

(solution) of a soluble solid and a solvent. The
process involves heating the solution until the
solvent evaporates (turns into gas) leaving
behind the solid residue.

Filtering

undissolved solids

Decantation
Decantation is use to
separate a mixture of solute and
solvent by allowing the
undissolved substance to settle
at the bottom of the container
and then the liquid is carefully
poured off to leave the solid or
sediments in the bottom of the
original container .
Threshing
Identify the method you can use to separate
the substance in each mixture.

1. scrap iron and plastic

2. salt and water
3. sand and gravel
4. pebbles and water
5. avocado, mango, and chico seeds
1. If every tiny nuts were accidentally
dropped on a pale of sand, how could you
quickly separate the nails from the sands?
2. Mix cold water and flour in a jar. Stir very
well. After a few minutes, you can see
sediments at the bottom of the jar. How
could you separate the sediments from
the water?
Choose the letter of the correct answer.

parts labelled A and B?

a.   A = Liebig condenser, B = flask

5. When do we use evaporation to separate
components?
 a.   A solid-solid mixture when one of the
components sublimes
 b.  A solid-liquid mixture when solid particles are
dissolved.
 c. A liquid-liquid mixture when one of the liquids
has a lower boiling point.

7. The members of your family ate different kinds
of fruits. When they were done eating, you
gathered the seeds from some of the fruits and put
these in a basin. Later, your father asked you to
separate the seeds according to kind. How will
you separate each kind of seed?
a. Sieving
b. Hand picking
c. Decantation
d. winnowing
8. Mix sand and water in a basin. If you were
asked try to separate the sand from the water,
what will you do?
