Geographical Indications (GIs) provide legal protection for agricultural, natural, or manufactured goods that originate from a definite geographical territory. Darjeeling tea from India has received GI protection. It is cultivated only in 87 designated tea gardens in the Darjeeling district and has a distinctive muscatel flavor due to the soil, weather, and human production processes. GI registration for Darjeeling tea has led to better domestic prices, increased industry compliance with regulations, economic improvements for tea gardens and workers, and strengthened the tea's brand and market position. The Tea Board of India focuses on legal protection, supply chain integrity, and promotional efforts to further support Darjeeling tea as a GI product.
