LAW OF

CONSERVATION
OF MOMENTUM

PHYSICAL SCIENCE
The Law of Conservation of
Momentum states:
“THE TOTAL MOMENTUM OF A SYSTEM REMAINS
THE SAME IF THERE IS NO NET EXTERNAL FORCE
ACTING ON IT.”
THIS CAN BE PROVEN THROUGH NEWTON’S SECOND
LAW OF MOTION. RECALL THAT THE NEWTON’S SECOND
LAW OF MOTION IS EXPRESSED IN THE FOLLOWING
EQUATION:
THE LAW OF CONVERSATION OF
MOMENTUM CAN BE APPLIED IN THE
COLLISION OF OBJECTS

1.ELASTIC
2.INELASTIC
ELASTIC COLLISION
TWO OBJECTS MOVE SEPARATELY AFTER
COLLISION AND THE TOTAL KINETIC ENERGY
OF THE SYSTEM REMAINS THE SAME.
IN EQUATION FORM, THE LAW OF
CONSERVATION OF MOMENTUM IN ELASTIC
COLLISIONS IS EXPRESSED AS FOLLOWS:
EQUATION

+ =’+
Example 1.

A 10kg ball moving at 13 m/s strikes a 20kg

ball at a rest. After the collision the 10kg
ball is moving with a velocity of 7m/s. what
is the velocity of the second ball?
Example 2.
inelastic collision

A 2200kg car travelling at 30m/s collides

with another 2200kg car that is at rest. The
two bumpers lock and the cars move
forward together. What is their final
velocity?
Example 3

A 12kg ball moving at 37m/s strikes a second ball

at rest. After the collision the 12kg ball is moving
with a velocity of 19m/s and the second ball is
moving with a velocity of 4m/s. What is the mass
of the second ball?
Example 4.

A 4kg ball moving east at a speed of 5m/s

strikes a 2kg ball at rest. Calculate the
velocities of the two balls assuming a
perfectly elastic collision.
example 5.

A 10kg mass traveling 2m/s meets and

collides elastically with 2kg mass
traveling 4m/s in the opposite direction.
Find the final velocities of both objects.
