What is Behaviorism?

 Human and animal behavior.

 Behaviorism as a Philosophy of Education is a branch of
psychology that, when applied to a classroom setting, focuses on
conditioning student behavior with various types of behavior
reinforcements and consequences called operant conditioning.
 Itassumes that all behaviors are either reflexes produced by a
response to certain stimuli in the environment, or a consequence
of that individual's history, including especially reinforcement
and punishment, together with the individual's current
motivational state and controlling stimuli.
Behaviorism – WHY TEACH?

Behaviorist schools are concerned with

the modification and shaping of students’
behavior by providing for a favorable
environment.
Behaviorism – WHAT TO TEACH?

Behaviorist teachers teach students

to respond favorably to various
stimuli in the environment.
Behaviorism – HOW TO TEACH?

 Behaviorist teachers ought to arrange environmental

conditions so that students can make the responses to
stimuli.
 Teachers ought to make the stimuli clear and
interesting to capture and hold the learners’ attention.
 They ought to provide appropriate incentives to
reinforce positive responses and weaken eliminate
the negative ones.
