SIMPLE LINEAR

REGRESSION
ANALYSIS
TWO MAIN OBJECTIVES:

• Establish if there is a statistically significant

relationship between two variables.

• Forecast New Observations

EXAMPLE

• A study is conducted on the relationship of the number of

absences (x) and the grades (y) of 15 students in English.
Using r at .05 level of significance and the hypothesis that
there is no significant relationship between absences and
grades of the students in English, determine the
relationship using the following data:
NUMBER OF ABSENCES (x) GRADES (y)
1 90
2 85
2 80
3 75
3 80
8 65
6 70

I. PROBLEM

• Is there a significant relationship between the absences and the grades of 15 students in
English?
II. HYPOTHESES

HO= There is no significant relationship between the absences and the grades of 15 students
in English.

H1= There is significant relationship between the absences and the grades of 15 students in
English.
III. LEVEL OF SIGNIFICANCE

A= 0.05
Df = N-2
Df= 15-2
=13
R .05= .514

V. DECISION RULE

If the r computed value is greater than or

beyond the critical value, reject HO.
PEARSON CORRELATION COEFFICIENT (R)
VI. CONCLUSION

The computed r value is -0.88 is beyond the critical value

-0.514at 0.05 level of significance with 13 degrees of
freedom therefore we are going to reject the null hypothesis.
This means that there is significant relationship between the
number of absences and the grades of 15 students in English.
SUPPOSED WE WANT TO PREDICT THE GRADE (Y) OF THE
STUDENT WHO HAS INCURRED 3 ABSENCES (X).
