Network

Devices, OSI &

TCP/IP Models

Network Devices: Hub

+ A hub is a device that connects devices on a network together as

well as receiving and sending out data to all devices on the
network except the device sending the original data (CertBros,
2016).
+ A hub is used in Layer 1 of the TCP/IP model (Pump, 2019).
Network Devices: Switch

+ Switches connect multiple devices to the same network within a

building and allows the same devices to share information with
each other (Cisco, 2021).
+ The switch can learn which port goes to what device based off
the MAC address (CertBros, 2016).
+ A switch is used on layer 1 of the TCP/IP model (Pump, 2019).
Network Devices: Router

+ Routers receive information through the IP address and sends it

out to the internet and does the same in reverse when receiving
information from the internet (CertBros, 2016).
+ A router is used on layer 2 of the TCP/IP model (Pump, 2019).
Network Devices: Server

+ A server is a computer that accepts, stores, and shares data to

other computers either on a LAN or through a WAN
(Christensson, 2014).
+ A server is used on layer 4 of the TCP/IP model (Pump, 2019).
Network Devices: Firewall

+ A firewall is a device used for security that monitors all the

incoming and outgoing traffic within a network to then allow or
block that traffic based on predetermined rules (Cisco, 2021)
+ A firewall is used on layer 3 of the TCP/IP model (Pump, 2019).
Network Devices: Access Point

+ An access point creates a wireless network for a specific

designated area by connecting to a hub, switch, or router
through an ethernet cable (Linksys, 2021).
+ A access point is used on layer 1 of the TCP/IP model (Pump,
2019).
Network Devices: Cable Modem

+ A cable modem connects devices to an internet service provider

(MoreField, 2020).
+ A cable modem is used on layer 1 of the TCP/IP model (Pump,
2019).
Differences Between the OSI &
TCP/IP Models
+ The OSI model consists of 7 layers (application, presentation,
session, transport, network, data link, & physical) and TCP/IP
consists of 4 layers (applications, transport, internet, & physical)
(Frenzel, 2013).
+ The TCP/IP model works horizontally and is more reliable than
the OSI model that works vertically (Jain, 2020).
TCP/IP Model Protocols

+ HTTP transfers data from webpages or other sources to a web

client (Guru99, 2021).
+ SMTP sends and receives the data to or from another email
address (Guru99, 2021).
+ SNMP manages the devices that are connected to the internet
(Guru99, 2021).
TCP/IP Model Protocols Cont.

+ DNS uses an IP address to identify the connection to the internet

from the host TCP/IP (Guru99, 2021).
+ TELNET is used to establish a connection between a local and a
remote device (Guru99, 2021).
+ FTP is used to send data from one device to another (Guru99,
2021).
