INTRODUCTION
Who is a consumer and what are their rights?

Consumer is a user of goods and services who pays for the goods and services which they
use and is entitled to expect the quality and nature of goods and services promised to the
citizen by the seller. Manufacturers owe a duty to the ultimate consumer taking care in
making their goals where there is no likelihood of them being examined before they reach
the ultimate consumer. In today’s mass production economy there is little contact between
the seller and consumer in a difficult position with very few avenues for redressal. The
intense competition satisfaction and hence, by and large the principals of “consumer is
king” is now expected as a transition to the principals of the consumer has to “be aware”.

 Right to safety :- This means that the consumer has to be protected against the marketing of
goods and services which are hazardous to life and property before purchasing the consumer
should insist on the quality of the products as well as on the guarantee of the products and services.

 Right to choose :- The consumer has the right to choose from a variety and various products at
competitive prices which an assurance of satisfactory. It means to be assured of satisfactory quality
and service at a fair price. It also includes right to basic goods and services.
Ex:- When we go to a shop to buy clothes we make sure not to stick to only one
company but to check different companies products and the quality of each of them. It is also The
duty of the shop keeper to make sure to help the consumer while choosing products.

 Right to be informed :- According to this right the consumer has the right to get
information about the quality, quantity, purity, standard and the price of goods or service. So as
to protect themselves against the abusive and unfair practices. The consumer should be protected
against dishonest or misleading advertisements or labeling. The consumer should insist on
getting all the information about the product or service before making a choice or decision. This
will enable the consumer to act wisely and responsibly and also enable the consumer from falling
prey to high pressure selling.

Right to seek redressal :- This means the consumer has right to seek redressal against unfair
trade practices or unfair treatment of a consumer. Consumers must make a complaint for their
inconvenience. Many times the complaint maybe small but it can be valuable and have a large
impact. As the markets are globalizing, the direct link between the manufacturer and the final user has
become really difficult. It is really hard to communicate due to which the consumer cannot express
their problems to the manufacturer. To change this, many consumer disputes redressal agencies
popularly known as consumer forums or consumer quotes. These are setup in a district level also.
CONSUMER RESPONSIBILITIES

As a consumer, they also have their set of responsibilities they should make sure to
follow their responsibilities. It is a must that they make sure to be fair and not engaged
in any malpractices. As a consumer of goods and services a consumer should make
sure to collect information about the particular product or service and update
themselves with the changes that come through the goods and services they use. As a
consumer, they also have the responsibility to make sure they inform or complain
about any discomfort they face with the products they use. It is their responsibility to
be more alert and question the goods and services they ought to use.
