Narrative text is a type of text that

consists of imaginary stories,
engineered true stories, or fairy
tales.

To entertain the reader with a

story
 To teach some lesson
 To explain something
 Narratives also communicate ideas
about the meaning of life, families,
morals and values and spirituality
Narrative Text;
c. sub-types

Narrative text is often

classified by sub-types or
genres. Some common
narrative genres include
detective fiction,
historical narratives,
memoirs, science fiction,
fables and myths. Each
genre contains its own
narrative tropes, plot
devices and character
types.

d. The characteristic/languange features
1. Past tense (killed, drunk, etc)
2. Adverb of time (Once upon a time, one day, etc)

3. Time conjunction (when, then, suddenly, etc)

4. Specific character. The character of the story is
specific, not general. (Cinderella, Snow White,
Alibaba, etc)
5. Action verbs. A verb that shows an action. (killed, dug,
walked, etc)
6. Direct speech. It is to make the story lively.
(Snow White said,”My name is Snow White).
The direct speech uses present tense
Narrative text;
e. structures
1. Orientation : It is about the opening paragraph where the
characters of the story are introduced

2. Complication : Where the problems in the story

developed.

3. Resolution : Where the problems in the story is solved.

 Generic structure example :
“CINDERELLA”
Orientation
Once upon time, there was a beautiful girl called Cinderella. She
lived with her stepsisters and stepmother. They were very bossy. She
had to do all the housework.

Complication
One day an invitation to the ball came to the family. Her stepsisters
did not let her go, so Cinderella was very sad. The stepsisters went to
the ball without her.

Resolution
Fortunately, the good fairly came and helped her to get to the ball. At
the ball, Cinderella danced with the prince. The prince felt in love
with her then he married her. They live happily ever after.
