What is Preposition?

Prepositions are words which link nouns, pronouns and phrases to


other words in a sentence. Prepositions usually describe the position
of something, the time when something happens and the way in which
something is done, although the prepositions "of," "to," and "for" have
some separate functions.

 A preposition is a part of speech that shows the


relationship between two things.
Why Preposition is Important?
Prepositions are limited in number, they are important 
because they act as vital markers to the structure
of a sentence; they mark special relationships between
persons, objects, and locations.

 Prepositions function as connectors, relating one word to another within


a sentence.
 They allow a speaker or writer to express the link between separate
items.
 Prepositions can convey information about location, time, or direction or
provide details.

 Are used to indicate the locations or position of objects.

 Example: ON, IN, UNDER, IN FRONT OF,

AMONG, BETWEEN
ON

UNDER
AGAINST

INSIDE
Against – means next to and touching on upright
surface for support.

Examples:

 The boy is leaning against the wall.

 I’m leaning against the white board.

 Don’t lean against the wall. It’s just been painted.


AMONG

BETWEEN

When naming distinct,


Often used for two items. individual items (can be 2, 3,
or more)

Example.
The cat jumped into the box.

The ball fell into the water


 ACROSS – means on the opposite side

The boy swam across the pond.

 Are used to show when things happen.

Example. BY, FOR, BEFORE


AFTER, SINCE, AT, and DURING
1. He will open the concert ___ 6:00 PM.
Answer. He will open the concert at 6:00 PM.

2. I will have a break ___ Independence Day.


Answer: I will have a break on Independence Day.

3. I will meet you ___ the 3rd week of January.


Answer: I will meet you in the 3rd week of January.

4.  I will have a tour ___ 2019.


Answer:  I will have a tour in 2019.
