1.
Definition of Plagiarism

➜ is an act to present a theft data or text
as your own to use (another's
production) without crediting the
source
➜ to commit literary theft
➜ to present as new and original an
idea or product derived from an
existing source

There’re laws against plagiarism

Which can get you in big trouble

2.
Tips

Let’s start with the second set of slides

There’re four steps to make sure your paper is free from

plagiarism:
Step 1 : Keep track of the sources you consult in your research.
Step 2 : Paraphrase or quote from your sources (and add your
own ideas).
Step 3 : Credit the original author in an in-text citation and
reference list.
Step 4 : Use a plagiarism checker before you submit.

Keep track of the sources you consult in your research.

-taking notes for your paper, make sure to record the source
-keeping your notes organized
-Keep track of every source you use ( magazine , book, website … )

-> Then you can easily go back and check where you found a phrase, fact, or idea that you want
to use in your paper.

Quotations and paraphrases

Quoting Paraphrasing
- means copying a piece - means using your own
of text word-for-word words to explain
- The copied text must something from a source
be introduced in your - allows you to give only
own words, enclosed in the most important
information

Generally, paraphrasing is better than quoting, especially for

longer passages and it ensures that your own voice is dominant
in your paper.

Quotations and paraphrases

12

Cite the original source

- When quoting or paraphrasing ,you must include an in-text citation (or

footnote citation) that identifies the original author
- Each in-text citation must correspond to a full reference in the
reference list or bibliography at the end of your paper.

There are many different citation styles ( APA, MLA and Chicago Style )

13

Use a plagiarism checker

Plagiarism checker :
- is a technology which scans your document, compares it to a huge database
of publications and websites, and highlights passages that are overly
similar to other texts
- allows you to identify any parts where you’ve forgotten a citation, left out
quotation marks, or included a paraphrase that’s too close to the original
text
