The circumference of a circle

For any circle,

circumference
π=
diameter

or,

C
π=
d

We can rearrange this to make a formula to find the circumference of a circle given
its diameter.

C = πd
The circumference of a circle

Use π = 3.14 to find the circumference of this circle.

C = πd
8 cm
= 3.14 × 8

= 25.12 cm
Finding the circumference given the radius

The diameter of a circle is two times its radius, or

d = 2r

We can substitute this into the formula

C = πd

to give us a formula to find the circumference of a circle given its radius.

C = 2πr
The circumference of a circle

Use π = 3.14 to find the circumference of the following circles:

C = πd 9m C = 2πr
4 cm
=π×4 =2×π×9

= 12.56 cm = 56.55 m

C = πd C = 2πr
58 cm
23 mm = π × 23 = 2 × π × 58

= 72.26 mm = 364.42 cm
Finding the radius given the circumference

Use π = 3.14 to find the radius of this circle.

C = 2πr

How can we rearrange this to
make r the subject of the formula?

Practice exercises
1. The sides of triangle are 80, 100 and 140 cm. respectively. Determine the
radius of the inscribed circle.

Given: a=80 cm
b= 100 cm
c= 140 cm
Required: r?
Formula:
A= rS

A2= S(S-a)(S-b)(S-c) A= r s
S= (a+b+c)/2
S= (80+100+140)/2 3,919.18= r (160)
S= 160 r= 24.49 cm.

A2= S(S-a)(S-b)(S-c)
A2 = 160(160-80)(160-100)(160-140)
A2 = 15,360,000
A=3,919.18 sq. cm

2. The sides of triangle are 70, 95 and 135 centimeters. Determine the
radius of the circumscribing circle.
A= abc A2= S(S-a)(S-b)(S-c)
4r S= (a+b+c)/2
S= (70+95+135)/2
r = abc S= 150 cm
4A
A2= S(S-a)(S-b)(S-c)
r = (70)(95)(135) cm3 A2 = 150(150-70)(150-95)(150-135)
4(3,146.43) cm2 A2 = 9,900,000 cm4
r = 71.33 cm. A=3,146.43 cm2
