as per International and Indian standards – Power
frequency, impulse voltage and DC testing of
Insulators, circuit breakers, bushing, isolators and
transformers- Insulation Coordination & testing of
cabilitys.
Introduction - Basics
High Voltage:
Any voltage beyond its reference value is called as
High Voltage.

The International Electrotechnical Commission

IEC defines high voltage as more than 1,000 volts
(V) of alternating current (AC) and above 1,500 V
of direct current (DC).
Introduction - Basics
Ranges of high Voltage:

Below 11kV Low Voltage

11kV to 100kV High Voltage
100kV to 400kV Very High Voltage
400kV to 800kV Extra High Voltage
800kV and above Ultra High Voltage
Introduction - Basics
Need for High voltage:
Ultimate aim is to get more efficiency of electric
energy during transmission.
As electricity is transmitted over a long
distances, there are inherent energy losses along
the way.
High voltage transmission minimizes the
amount of power lost as electricity flows from
one location to other
Introduction - Basics
DIELECTRICS INSULATION

A dielectric or dielectric ma Any material that keeps energy

terial is an electrical insulator such as electricity, heat, or cold
that can be polarized by an from easily transferring through
applied electric field. is an insulator.
Solids- glass, mica Wood, plastic, rubber, and glass
Liquids- oil, distilled water are good insulators.
Gas – nitrogen, Dry air
