Characteristics

of Matter
Prepared by: Ms. Lyne Mariefe Agmata
Class 3 Adviser
In this lesson, students are expected to

A. Describe different objects in terms of their physical

characteristics

B. Demonstrate how matter has mass and volume, and

C. Measure the mass and volume of some materials.

M A T T ER
Is anything that occupies space and has mass
and weight.
Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass.
It exists everywhere.

All living things and non-living things are matter,

whether you can see them or not.
HERE ARE EXAMPLES OF MATTER
Three (3) common states of matter

Molecules
Molecules

Matter is made up Solid, liquid and

of molecules which Molecules are tiny gas have different
are arranged particles that make up characteristics
according to its matter because their
state. molecules move
in different ways.
Properties of Matter
Mass refers to the amount of matter an object
contains.
Weight is the pull of gravity on an object.
Properties of Matter.

Weighing scale is use to measure the weight of an

object.
NOTE: (let the student read definition on page 7)

Mass changes when an object moves away from the center

of gravity.
Since the pull of gravity affects weight, weight can change.
However, the mass if an object always stays the same.

The pulls of gravity on Earth, Moon, and Jupiter are

different from each other because they are not of the same
size. Therefor, the weight of an object will be different but
the mass of the same object will not change,
Study the chart below
Variables Earth Moon Jupiter Remarks

Mass 6kg 6 kg 6kg same

Weight 6 kg 1 kg 15kg change

Gravity 1 1/6 2.5 different

• Volume is the space that matter occupies.
It has length, width, and thickness.
Volume = length x width x height
V= l x w x h

V= l x w x h
V= 8cm x 4 cm x 4cm
V= 128
Density is a property of matter that is used to identify
the material by comparing its mass from the space it
takes up.
