DEFINITION
Nutrition maybe defined as the science of food and its
relationship to health. It is concerned primarily with
the part played by nutrients in growth, development
and maintenance.
Good nutrition means "maintaining a nutritional status
that enables us to grow well and enjoy good health.”
aspects of nutrition, the subject will be dealt with in five
sections : dietary constituents, nutritional requirements,
assessment of nutritional status.
Avoiding of
MALNUTRITION is the
basic goal in nutrition
therapy.
NUTRIENTS
Nutrients are organic and inorganic complexes contained in food. There are
about 50 different nutrients which are normally supplied through the foods we
eat. Each nutrient has specific functions in the body.

PROTEINS
Proteins are complex organic nitrogenous compounds. They are composed of carbon, hydrogen,
oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur in varying amounts. Some proteins also contain phosphorus and iron
and occasionally other elements.

Protein constitute about 20 per cent of the body weight in an adult.

Proteins are made up of smaller units, called amino acids.

FUNCTION :
• body building
• repair and maintenance of body tissues
• Maintenance of osmotic pressure s synthesis of certain substance s like antibodies, plasma
proteins, hemoglobin, enzymes, hormones and coagulation factors.
• connected
• with the immune mechanism of the body.
FATS
• Fats are solid at 20 deg. C . they are called "oils" if they are liquid at that temperature.
Fats and oils are concentrated sources of energy.
• adipose tissue constitutes between 10 to 15 per cent of body weight.

• The third major component of food is carbohydrate, which is the main source of energy
• are three main sources of carbohydrates, viz.,starches, sugar and cellulose

VITAMINS
• Vitamins are organic compound. Although they are required in small amounts, but are
essential for many important function of the body.
• They cannot be produced by body. Due to shortage of specific vitamins various
deficiency disease could occur.

MINERALS
• Minerals are required for many purposes like forming the frame and rigid structure of
the body , as part of the body/cell fluids and for number of cellular and sub cellular
physiological functions
