Satellite Communication

Unit-1 Overview of Satellite

Systems
Frequency Allocations for Satellite Services
Discussion !!

• What is the Geosynchronous distance ?

• What is the disadvantage of Passive satellite ?

• Why the moon is not used as communication satellite?

• Give any two advantages of active satellites.

Regions for Frequency Planning
• The world is divided into three regions to facilitate
frequency planning
• Region 1: Europe, Africa, Soviet Union and Mongolia
• Region 2: North and South America and Greenland
• Region 3: Asia (excluding region1), Australia and the
south west Pacific
• Frequency bands are allocated to various satellite
services
• Different frequency bands may be allotted to same
service for different regions
Satellite Services
• Fixed Satellite Services (FSS)
• Broadcasting Satellite Services (BSS)
• Mobile Satellite Services
• Navigational Satellite Services
• Meteorological Satellite Services
Fixed Satellite Services

• Link for Existing telephone networks

• Transmits TV signals to cable companies for distribution

Broadcasting Satellite Services

• Direct broadcast to home (direct broadcast satellite service), DTH

service in Europe

Mobile Satellite Services

• Land mobile, maritime mobile and aeronautical mobile

Navigational Satellite Services

• GPS satellites

Meteorological Satellite Services

• Search and rescue service, weather report services

Frequency Band Designation
Satellite Services using Frequency Bands
• VHF band : mobile and navigational services
• L band : mobile satellite services and navigation
systems
• C band : FSS, 4 to 6 GHz subrange – denote the C band
by 6/4 GHz
• Ku band : DBS and few FSS 12 to 14 GHz, 14/12 GHz
