ROLE OF CO-OPERATIVES ON WOMEN ENTREPRENEURSHIP

(A STUDY OF SURKHET VALLEY)

Background
A co-operative is "an autonomous association of persons
united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social,
and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly-owned
and democratically-controlled enterprise" (Rothschild,
1986).
Women Entrepreneurs are defined as these who operate
and control an enterprise and their holding of the
enterprise is at least 51 percent (Sharma, 2016).
Objectives of the Study
The general objective of the study is to determine
the role of co-operatives on women
entrepreneurship. The specific objectives of the
study are as follows:
• To find out the situation of co-operative
education on women entrepreneurship.
• To assess the financial status of women.
• To analyze the leadership development of
women.
• To identify the training and skill development
programs provided to women.
• To determine the enhancement of self-
confidence among women.

Limitations of the Study
The study has been limited within the following points:
• The universe of the study was limited within the entire
number of women members of co-operatives in
Surkhet valley.
• The study was limited within the role of co-operatives
on women entrepreneurship.
• Questionnaire technique was only used to collect data
for the purpose of the study.
• The respondents were limited within 60 women
members of different co-operatives in Surkhet valley.
Research Design
• In order to collect data, questionnaire, one of the types of
survey was formulated in order to find out the role of co-
operatives on women entrepreneurship in Surkhet valley. This
study has been quantitative and descriptive research design.
• The target population of this study was all the women who
were engaged in co-operative organizations in Surkhet valley.
• Convenient sampling method was used to select the sample
• The information was collected from 60 women entrepreneurs
from 20 different co-operative organizations using convenient
sampling method.
• This research used self-design questionnaires for the data
collection.
Findings
• The study found that 36.67 percent of the respondents strongly agreed, 46.67
percent agreed, 8.33 percent were neutral, 5 percent disagreed and 3.33
percent strongly disagreed that co-operative education enhances women
entrepreneurship.
• Out of the total respondents, 31.67 percent strongly agreed, 56.67 percent
agreed, 6.67 percent were neutral, 3.32 percent disagreed and 1.67 percent
strongly disagreed that co-operative enhances financial status of women
entrepreneurs.
• The study found that out of the total respondents, 36.67 percent strongly
agreed, 55 percent agreed, 5 percent were neutral and 3.33 percent disagreed
that co-operative organization help women in leadership development.
• The study found that out of the total respondents, 32.73 percent were highly
satisfied, 47.27 percent were satisfied, 10.91 percent were neutral, 3.64
percent were dissatisfied and 5.45 percent were highly dissatisfied with the
training and skill development programs provided by the co-operative.
• All of the respondents said that co-operative has helped to develop self-
confidence. It can be understood that co-operatives help to develop self-
confidence among women entrepreneurs.
Recommendations
• It is suggested to the co-operatives to provide co-operative
education to the women members to enhance their
knowledge.
• It is suggested to the concerned authorities to provide co-
operative education to the women to enhance their
entrepreneurship.
• It is suggested to the co-operatives to financially support
women members to start the entrepreneurship.
• It is suggested to the co-operatives to conduct different skill
development programmes to enhance the entrepreneurship
of the members.
• It is suggested that the women who wish to start
entrepreneurships should be morally and financially
supported.
