Green business practices in Pharmaceutical

and Hospital industry:

Presented by:
Neha Mahajan
Chavi Chadha
• Merck & Co., Inc. has cut its energy consumption in the past five years by 50
percent, and has pledged to reduce total global greenhouse gas emissions by 12

percent by 2012 recently installed solar energy panels at its offices in New Jersey,

which generate 7.5 percent of the power at the company's headquarters.

• GlaxoSmithKline redesigned its packaging to cut down the amount of materials it

uses to pack its products

• Big Pharma has learned that green practices, like reducing energy consumption, is
the next best thing to a healthy paycheck from a big customer.

• Allergan the company's energy management, recycling and other environmental

efforts save the company about $5 million a year, or about .5 to 1 percent of the

company's total revenue. One area where the company is focusing its efforts now is

in the area of reducing greenhouse gases

AGENDA

 Sharing context
 A brief introduction about green business practices
 Their application in Pharma and hospital Industry
 Application of Green Chemistry
 Focus mainly on two major areas: waste management
and facility layout
 Recommendations and conclusion
‘‘GREEN BUSINESS’’??????
• A ‘Green Business’ is an enterprise
that has no negative impact on the
global or local environment,
community society or economy.
Green activities ensure that all
processes products and
manufacturing activities adequately
address current environmental
concerns while maintaining a profit.
• These are the practices which decrease
the impact made on the environment by
harmful chemicals, material and wastes
generated by processes to manufacture
products and services.
• Triple Top line value production
GREEN WASTE MANAGEMENT-PHARMA
INDUSTRY
E – Factor is defined as per kg waste generated per kg of product is in the range of 25 to
more than 100 of the pharma industry
PRINCIPLES OF GREEN CHEMISTRY

• Prevent waste
• Design safety products
• Implement less hazardous chemical process,
• Use renewable feed stocks,
• Employ catalysts instead of stoichiometric reagents,
• Avoid chemical derivates,
• Reduce solvent use or use safer solvents and reaction
conditions,
• Improve energy efficiency,
• Design biodegradability,
• Analyze in real time to prevent pollution,
• Minimize accidents, recover all elements
WHEN TO IMPLEMENT “GREEN CHEMISTRY”?

Pre Clinical No. of molecules very high

Phase I No. of molecules still high

Volumes involved very low

Phase II Limited No. of molecules

Volumes increased

Phase III No. of molecules further shortlisted

Volumes further increased (kgs to ton)

Commercial DMF Filed

Volumes high (tens of tons)

Phase II & Phase III : Right time to start exploring “Green Chemistry” based processes.
Will ensure next generation drugs are manufactured through Green Processes.
GREEN BUILDINGS:
Building designs using green principles provide environmental and health
benefits to occupants, while reducing use of natural resources.

The green buildings program systematically considers these factors:

• Water conservation
• Waste management
• Renewable energy sources
• Nontoxic materials
• Recycled/reused materials
• Energy efficiency
• Reduced environmental impact on the building site
• Wise use of space/reduced building size
• Balance risk vs. Life cycle energy use when specifying "spare" capacity of
equipment
• Balance of environmental and economic impacts
ATTRIBUTES OF A GREEN HOSPITAL BUILDING

 Eco-friendly site development.

 Special CO2 Sensors.
 High Performance glass in façade.
 Polystyrene Insulation.
 Plantation on the roof.
 Solar panels for hot water.
 High COP chillers, variable
frequency drive on chillers.
 Heat recovery wheel.
 Variable frequency drive on cooling tower pumps
and AHUs.

 Smart lighting design & inelegant crystallization of

light fixtures.

 In landscaping, focus on using native plants.

 Sustainable and indigenous building materials such

as FSC wood, concrete with high contents re-rolled
steel, recycled framework for the entire façade,
flooring and walls.
BENEFITS OF A GREEN BUILDING

• Energy savings 40%-50%

• Water Savings 20%-30%
• Heat reclaim system with VAV.
• Better indoor air quality.
• Better indoor ambience with day lighting and views
which provide healing benefits for patients.
• Patients recovery faster (based on research).
• Substantial productivity gains including reduction in
absenteeism and improved work quality based on
“people friendly” green design.
GREEN PRACTICES WHICH CAN BE FOLLOWED IN
HOSPITALS FOR WASTE MANAGEMENT
 Getting started (Form a team, conduct
assessment, provide education and training to
implement a successful waste reduction
program.
 Green Purchasing
 Waste minimization (installation of on-site
compost vessel).
 While choosing medical waste.
 services, choose companies that.
 practice environmentally safer
 procedures.
 Use of green cleaning products.
 Incorporation of materials that are designed
 for disassembly and recycle / reuse at the end
 of functional life.
TO SUM UP:
• With ‘green’ being the buzzword in
the industry, including pharma and
hospital, such programmes will be
incorporated into corporate
performance management.
• These will be implemented
aggressively to ensure that
companies have a concrete plan to
reduce year-on-year reduction on
environment wastage and green
• The phrase ‘think globally, act locally’,
should be applied to the corporate
performance management
programme for environmental
wastage and green initiatives.
