Advantages & Disadvantages
INTRODUCTION
•NFC is a short-range wireless
technology.

•NFC provides unique advantages

over other available wireless
technologies.

•The design includes a near-field

transmitter and receiver to send
data from one computer to
another.
NFC - Technical Basics
• Wireless Short Range Communication Technology
• Based on RFID technology at 13.56 MHz
• Operating distance typical up to 10 cm
• Compatible with today’s field proven contactless RFID
technology
• Data exchange rate today up to 424 kilobits/s

NFC (continued...)
• NFC is complementary to Bluetooth and Wi-fi with
their long distance capabilities.
• NFC does not require line of sight.
• Easy and simple connection method.
• Provides communication method
to non-self powered devices.
HISTORY
• NFC traces its roots back to Radio-Frequency
IDentification, or RFID.
• Charles Walton patent RFID in 1983.
• RFID allows a reader to send radio waves to a
passive electronic tag for identification,
authentication and tracking.
NFC Forum
• A non-profit industry association.
• Formed on March 18, 2004.
• NXP Semiconductors, Sony and Nokia
• The NFC Forum promotes the use, supports
standardization and directs the future
developments of the NFC open platform
technology.
• As of June 2013, the NFC Forum had more
than 190 member companies.
NFC v/s Bluetooth
1.NFC has a much shorter range than Bluetooth.
2.Bluetooth is much faster than NFC.
3.Bluetooth consumes more power than NFC.
4.Bluetooth requires devices to be paired while
NFC does not.
5.NFC works with passive devices while Bluetooth
does not.
6.NFC has a different set of uses than Bluetooth.

CONNECTING DEVICES
• Nokia has used NFC technology to pair
Bluetooth headsets and speakers with one

NFC MODES
• Communication Modes
o Active mode
o Passive mode

• Operating Modes
o Peer-to-Peer
o Read/write
o Card emulation
COMMUNICATION MODES
Active
• The target and the initiator both devices
have power supplies.
• Can communicate with one another by
alternate signal transmission.

Passive
• The initiator device generates radio signals
and the target device gets powered by this
electromagnetic field.
• The target device responds to the initiator
by modulating the existing electromagnetic
field.
OPERATING MODES
Peer-to-Peer mode:
Peer to peer mode enables two NFC devices
to share data between them.
Ex: Phone to phone transactions.
OPERATING MODES
Reader/writer mode:
• Use the mobile to read/write external tags.
ex: reading a smart poster.
OPERATING MODES
• Card emulation mode:
• Use the mobile as a tag for external readers.
Ex: Mobile as a payment card.
ADVANTAGES
• Quicker connections, no typing errors.
• Easy to use, only requires the click of a button,
no software.
• They are compatible with existing RFID
structures.
•It consumes less power.
•Does not require the setup and connection
establishment with another device.
DISADVANTAGES
• Only works in short ranges.
• Low data transfer rate.
• Can be costly for merchant
companies to initially adopt the
technology.
•Can be affected if there is metal
between them.
CONCLUSION
• Easy to use wireless communication interface for the last few
centimeters.

• Easy to use target selection, by simply holding two devices

close to each other.
• The technology of NFC is used in today’s era in business field
because of its flexibility .
