Teacher I
PRAYER Dear God,
Thank you for the gift of life.
We are grateful for this day
to be with our teacher
and classmates to enjoy and learn.
We ask for your guidance, knowledge
and wisdom during our virtual class
to easily cope up with our lesson.
We ask this through our
Lord Jesus Christ, Amen!
Are you excited for a fun learning
session today?

REVIEW
Everything around
us is MATTER!
Air soil
WHY?
Matter is anything
that occupies space
and has mass
and volume.
plant water
BUT WAIT...

Have I said that AIR is a matter? Does it

occupy space, has weight and volume?

YES
!
Air is also a matter!

SCIENCE 5
Q1-MODULE 1
LESSON 1: Recognizing Useful
and Harmful Materials
(Properties of Matter)
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

describe the appreciate the

distinguish the
different importance of
properties of
properties properties of
material being
of materials; materials that are
described; and
useful.

PROPERTIES
OF MATTER
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
OF MATTER
A physical property is a characteristic of matter
that may be observed and measured without
changing the chemical identity
of a sample.
HARDNESS

A material has this property when it does not bend easily while
resisting pressure and force. Materials having this property such
metals, wood, and rocks are commonly used to construct buildings
and bridges.
BRITTLENESS

A material has this property when it gets broken,

cracked or damaged because of high pressure. Some
examples of objects under this property are glass and
porcelains.
FLEXIBILITY

A material has this property when it is capable of

bending or being bent. Materials having this property
such plastic strings, thin metal wires, ropes are used to
bind or tie things.
ELASTICITY

When a solid material has the ability to return to its

original shape after being stretched, it is considered to be
elastic. Rubber band which is a polymer is a perfect
example of this property.
CONDUCTIVIT
Y
Another property of matter that makes a material
conduct electricity and heat. Metals are the best
examples for this property.
MALLEABILIT
Y
A material has this property when it has the ability to be
hammered into flat sheets just like gold, silver, iron and
aluminum. Malleable materials can be turned into different
shapes and other desired designs.
DUCTILITY

It is the ability of the material to be drawn into thin

wires. Metals that exhibit this property are used in
electrical wirings.
POROSITY

Cloth and sponge are examples of porous materials

because they have the ability to absorb liquids.
CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
OF MATTER

Unlike physical properties which can be easily identified and observed,

chemical properties can only be observed and measured when a
material has undergone change in its composition or becomes another
type of material.
COMBUSTIBILITY

It is the ability of the material to burn. Examples of

combustible materials are alcohol, wood, dried leaves,
kerosene, oil, sawdust, paper, wax and gasoline.
FLAMMABILITY

It is the ability to ignite or catch fire and burn easily.

Alcohol and gasoline are flammable because they burn
easily.
BIODEGRADABILI
TY
It is the ability of material to decompose or decay.
Examples of biodegradable materials are fruit,
vegetable peeling, plant clippings, dead plants and
animals.

REFLECTION
Why is it important for us to know the properties
of matter?
REMEMBE
RProperties are defined as the
characteristics that make matter
distinct from one another.
REMEMBE
Like us humans, we have different
R
characteristics—colors, height, weight,
personality and the like.

ALL WE NEED IS…

REMEMBE
RCHARACTERISTICS AND
RESPECT OUR DISTINCT

DIFFERENCES.
USEFUL AND
HARMFUL
MATERIALS
USEFUL MATERIALS
Materials are considered useful when it serves a purpose.
These materials may have properties such as durability,
resistance to water, heat, or acid, flexibility, elasticity and
hardness. Some useful materials can also be reused, take for
example, a container for any solid or liquid material.
HARMFUL
MATERIALS
Hazardous materials are substances that could harm human
health or the environment.
