RESEARCH

METHODOLOGY
Prepared by:
Ar. GERALDINE JACELA-PAGUIGAN
At the end of the course, the students should be able to:
1. Equipped with the importance of research
2. Be knowledgeable on the different methodologies/ tools and
techniques in the conduct of research
3. Be competent in the conduct of thesis
Course Outline:
 Overview and introduction to the course Basic statistics
 Research definitions, types, importance etc. Data analysis and interpretation
Methodologies/ tools and techniques in research Preparation of a thesis proposal
Research Design The research problems and objectives
Sampling Design The research report: Writing the research
Proposal
Data Collection Methods
Consolidation and final evaluation
Data Processing and Tabulation
Meaning of Research

Is the pursuit of Truth with the help of

study, observations, comparison and
experiment.
Meaning of Research

It is define as a “careful, critical,

disciplined inquiry, varying in technique
and method according to the nature and
conditions of the problem identified, directed
toward the clarification or resolution (or both)
of a problem” (Good, 464)
Meaning of Research

the process of gathering data or information

to solve a particular or specific problem in
a specific problem in a scientific manner.”
(Manuel and Medel, p.5)
Meaning of Research

an attempt to gain solutions to the

problems. (Treece and Treece, p.3)
Objectives of Research
◦ Defining and redefining the problems
◦ Formulating the hypotheses or suggested solutions.
◦ Collecting, organizing and evaluating data.
◦ Making deductions and reading conclusions
◦ And at last carefully testing the conclusions to determine whether
they fit the formulating hypotheses
Motivation in Research
◦ Desire to get research degree
◦ Desire to face challenges in solving the unsolved
problems
◦ Desire to get intellectual joy doing some creative work
◦ Desire to be of service to the society
◦ Desire to get responsibility
TYPES OF RESEARCH

Descriptive Research:
Means description of the state of affairs as it exists at present.
Researcher only reports only what has happened or what is
happening
TYPES OF RESEARCH
Applied Research:

Aims at finding solution for an immediate problem facing a society or an

industry/ business Organizations.
TYPES OF RESEARCH

Quantitative Research:
Based on the measurement of quantity or amount. Applicable to
phenomena that can be expressed in terms of quantity.
TYPES OF RESEARCH

Conceptual Research:
Related to some abstract ideas or theory. Used by philosophers and
thinkers to develop new concepts or re-interpret existing ones.
TYPES OF RESEARCH
Empirical Research:

Relies on experience or observations alone, often without due regard for system
and theory.
TYPES OF RESEARCH
Qualitative Research:

Concerned with qualitative phenomenon, i.e. phenomenon relating to or

involving quality or kind.
TYPES OF RESEARCH
Fundamental Research:

Mainly concerned with generalizations and with the formulation of a theory.

TYPES OF RESEARCH
Analytical Research:

Researcher has to use facts on information already available and

analyze these to make a critical evaluation of the material.
RESEARCH METHODS Vs. RESEARCH
METHODOLOGY
Research Methods:
Refers to the methods/techniques researchers use in performing
research operations.

Research Methodology:
It may be understood as a science of studying how research is done
scientifically. In it we study the various steps that are generally adopted by
researcher in studying his research problem along with the logic behind them.
ACTIVITY 1:
1. Choose your partner
2. Download an Architectural Research Article from any Scientific
Journal. You may search and download from the Google Scholar
◦ Keywords/ Topics you may choose
1. Sustainable Design
2. Building Envelope
3. Low Carbon Architecture
4. Any Research Article Related to Architecture
Assignment:
Term Papers / Case Study Instruction
Research on any Architectural Study/ Research Work/ Thesis as a case in focus. You
are encouraged to compose your report/paper about the research article.
You are free to organize your paper in any way you think you can best present your
case as long as you will generally capture the following contents.
◦ 1. Title of the architectural thesis/ research
◦ 2. Determine the Significance of the study
◦ 3. Determine the Objectives
◦ 4. Research Methodology
◦ 5. Findings/Results of the Study
◦ 6. Conclusion and Recommendations of the Research Proponents
Assignment:
Term Papers / Case Study Instruction
You are scheduled to present your term paper in class through a MS PowerPoint
presentation. Take note of the time allocation for your presentation. After the
presentation, an open forum (Q&A) will follow. Class participation is encouraged
during the period; everyone should take advantage by asking relevant questions
that will enhance our understanding the concepts about research methodology. It is
expected that the assigned reporter can lead and guide everyone in the class on
pointing out appropriate, interesting or unique practices and methodology that may
guide everyone in their conduct of research.
Expected output:
Presentation of Research article. (architectural research, thesis, article)

Critic paper about the architectural research.

Submit the article together with the term paper.

Use A4 bond paper. Margins on all sides shall be 1”. Use double space.
