HISTORY OF SWIMMING

ORIGIN OF SWIMMING

 The earliest real proof that man (the mammal) is a swimmer comes from cave
drawings
dating back to 9,000 B.C. that have been unearthed in the Middle East.
 These drawings depict people swimming something that resemblances the
breaststroke.
 In Egypt, no knowledge exists of swimming before 4000 BC.
 In Ancient Greece and Rome, swimming was a standard part of military training.
SWIMMING RECORD BEFORE CHRIST
 A cylindrical seal of 3200 BC with the impression of swimmers using
various strokes has been found.
 Hieroglyphics symbols for swimming about 4000 BC showed crawling
figures with one arm forward and one arm backward
 Wall etchings of the battle of Kadish, 1300 BC have been earthed.
 They depict Hitties fleeing across the river Orontes from the warriors of
Rome II all are swimming over arm.
HISTORY OF SWIMMING
 In 1844, swimming had already established itself as a popular
competitive sport in England.
 After the period of 40 years, the Indians, restored the “totally un-
European” style as the crawl-a stroke so speedy that it developed
competitive swimming.
 Middle Eastern civilizations described men swimming with the dog
stroke with the help of mosaics and drags at Pompeii, Italy.
STROKES: FREESTYLE (AUSTRALIAN CRAWL)

 Freestyle is the most widely used of the four major swimming strokes.
 It is the fastest and the easiest stroke and the principles of its technique
can also be applied to the other strokes like backstroke, same kick used.
 The kick used in freestyle, referred to as the “flutter kick”, consists of two
movements: an upbeat and a downbeat.
 The most effective kick is a small one. If the kick is too large, it will
come too far out of the slipstream and create unwanted drag.

BREASTSTROKE
It is the oldest swimming stroke.
It is often considered a more relaxing stroke than the other
three.
Sidestroke is a form of breaststroke performed on your side;
elementary backstroke is a breaststroke performed on your
back.

BACKSTROKE

Backstroke is distinguished from the other three strokes by the

fact that it is, performed on your back.
Backstroke is a great break from freestyle, and helps balance
your freestyle muscles.
Backstroke kick is just the freestyle flutter kick performed on
your back.

BUTTERFLY
 It is the newest racing stroke and thus has a short history.
 It has only been a separate stroke since 1952—just 20 years before Mr. Fly
himself, Mark Spitz, crushed his competitors at the Munich Olympics.
 Butterfly has its origins in breaststroke.
 It is the most beautiful of the four strokes, however, hard to learn and do.
 Fast and powerful stroke and usually performed in shorter sets than the
other strokes due to its increased strenuousness.
