1.WHAT IS GIS?

 Geographic Information system (GIS)

 It is an important/crucial structure for gathering, managing and
analyzing of data regarding spatial and geography of earth.
 GIS is simply called as DIGITAL MAPS.
 Elements of GIS – hardware, Computer programs, Data.
 Data for GIS are often collected directly within the field by any
original survey or available topographic maps, aerial
photographs, images etc.

2.GENERAL APPLICATIONS OF GIS :
• Business – For site selection and marketing research.
• Defense and Intelligence – Military operations
• Agriculture – Crop monitoring, irrigation management.
• Government – Land use classification, elections and redistricting urban
and regional planning.
• Health and human services – Disease patterns detection.
• Natural resources – conservation and resource management like forestry
services.
• Public safety – to watch Homeland Security and enforcement.
• Transportation – Highways, Traffic density study.
• Utilities and communication.
• Education – Archeology research.
3.APPLICATION OF GIS IN AGRICULTURE :
• Monitoring crop status.
• Crop yield estimation.
• Crop identification.
• Precision farming.

3.1 Monitoring crop status :
• Identifying stressed plants.
• Detecting fungus attack.
• Nutrient deficiencies.

3.2 Crop yield estimation :

The vegetation reflects the electromagnetic wave during a particular manner, we
will assess the crop status by using remote sensing data. By combining these
electromagnetic wave data with other additional data like climate in complex
models, it’s possible to estimate the ultimate yield of a crop field at a really early
stage.
3.3 Precision agriculture :
Precision Agriculture or Precision Farming may be a collection of
agricultural practices that specialize in specific area of the sector
at a specific moment in time.
This includes –
• Associating data with co-ordinates.
• Estimating plant population and future yield.
• Identifying fertilization and pesticide requirements.
• Early warning for insect attacks.
• Detecting Irrigation requirements.
4.REASON FOR CHOOSING STARBUCKS

 Because Starbucks helps in strengthening the socio-economic

development in the communities by investing to improve their
activities.
 They also work with Non-Governmental organizations which
have huge experts with good experience in farming practices
and belonging to their communities. They also give their
support to farmers by establishing Farmer Support Centres and
giving loans to farmers and they mainly invests in agricultural
activities.
 Starbucks is a very famous coffee shop and it has unique trend
for its richest aroma and flavourful hot cup of coffee. In spite of
their huge competitors no other company can beat its aromatic
rich taste.
5.HOW GIS IS EMPLOYED IN THE COMPANY?

 The use of GIS in Starbucks is for selection of the site and for their product
placement. One of its major uses is to pinpoint the only location for
subsequent stores the Starbucks plans to open.
 Starbucks also uses GIS to research where its customers spend extra cash
than average on coffee purchases as the way to make a choice where to
place the high-end Clover Brewing System.
ATLAS
 Atlas, it is a GIS application used by the Starbucks.
 Once Starbucks determines the optimal location, Atlas is additionally useful
for helping Starbucks to determine their good menu offerings. For instance,
Atlas also helping the Starbucks to seek out the areas where the absolutely
the best alcohol consumption goes on.
 Starbucks made an agreement with a location-analytics company called Esri
in order to use their technology platform which helps them in analysing the
retail locations and maps. It uses data like population density, average
incomes, and traffic patterns to spot target areas for a replacement store.
 Starbucks also have an app in India with name “Starbucks IN”. In this
application we can find the Starbucks stores near to our location. By using
this application, we can order the beverages and we can pay from the app
and also, we will earn rewards. By using this app, customers receive
ready-made order suggestions generated with reinforcement learning
platform that’s built with Microsoft.
6.TECHNOLOGIES USED BY STARBUCKS

 Starbucks is using the Reinforcement Learning Technology —

it’s a kind of machine learning technique during which a system
learns to make new and appropriate decisions in huge complex
manner and unpredictable environments on the basis of their
external feedbacks — to provide a more personalized experience
for sponsors who use the Starbucks mobile app.
 With the assistance of such quite technology and therefore the
work of Starbucks data scientists, 16 million Starbucks Rewards
members now receive useful recommendations from the app for
foods and drinks based on local store inventory, weather, time of
the day, community preferences and former orders.
7.HOW STARBUCKS CHOOSE THEIR BUSINESS
LOCATIONS?

 Seven hundred plus partners in more than 15 countries

have started their new store journey in ArcGIS.
 ArcGIS is a business intelligence tool and it’s an outsized
GIS software application which contains workflow, store
performance and analysis. New store decisions are taken
by the local/general partners. When looking to pick the
location for brand new stores the partners check out
various sources for deciding. The sources are like- trade
areas, generators, retail clusters, traffic and transportation
nodes. In any case these analyses are helpful for opening
the replacement store. ArcGIS is helpful for locating
news for particular geographic areas.
8.STARBUCKS VISION AND MISSION STATEMENTS

 The Vision of Starbucks is to treat people like family and that they are
going to be loyal and provides their all. “The company leverages on a
mixture of Company Owned and Licensed Stores.
 Its Mission is “to inspire and encourage the human spirit – One Person,
One Cup and One neighbourhood at a time.
9.ADVANTAGES OF USING GIS IN STARBUCKS

 GIS allows the Starbucks users to envisage/ analyze and interpret

the data for better understanding of relations, patterns and models
for a specific location.
 In Starbucks GIS is used for Optimization of Resources.
 Thinking and Decision making will be easier with the help of GIS.
 The amount on spending for particular work may decrease and
increase the efficiency.
 The better communication will be seen within the company with
their employees and customers.
 With the help of GIS, Starbucks can improve the better designs
and therefore the allocation of resources.
 GIS can also improve the management of Natural Resources.
 By using GIS, Starbucks will able to ready for providing specific
answers to any question in case of required data.
 It provides accurate data and location graphics for their consumers.
 It gives higher predictions and therefore the analysis for the
purchasers who are using GIS.
 GIS is ready to handle the large data and files and can be used to
convert it into relatively smaller ones.
