Action Research

 By Viktoria Shymko
Problem
 The students do not manage a good communication
when giving a presentation, showing difficulties in
their speaking.
 They get in anxiety showing lack of confidence
especially at the moment of answering questions.
Research Questions

 What are the main reasons that students are afraid to speak?
 How can I motivate students to overcome anxiety and lack of confidence ?
The Hypothesis

 If target learners are exposed to the action research

“Improving the English communicative skills” taking into
account different strategies to improve speaking and
communicative skills, they will be confident in the
communication and learning of the target language
Sociocultural Theory Of Learning -
Vygotsky(1934)
 It argues that the appropriation of a skill is achieved through the meditation
what is sometimes called assisted performance.
 Information and communications technology (ICT) can be used to support the
learning environment by providing tools for discourse, discussions,
collaborative writing, and problem-solving.
 Communicative activities are characterized by the following
features:
 • The motivation of the activity is to achieve some outcome, using language.
• The activity takes place in real time.
• Achieving the outcome requires the participants to interact, for example to
listen as well as speak.
• There is no restriction on the language used.
Methods:
 To prepare a lot of groups and pairs work activities
 Do not correct absolutely all mistakes that students make when
speaking
 To create interest and develop communicative skills
 To create friendly atmosphere
 To arrange motivational sessions to overcome the lack of
confidence and anxiety
This research will be provided for the 9th grade
students in the school #12 in Ivano-Frankivsk

 Data:
 The 9th grade students avoid all of the speaking activities. They do not manage
a good communication when giving a presentation, showing difficulties in their
speaking. They prefer individual writing or reading tasks even if it`s boring
sometimes.
 Possible solutions:
 Due to the sociocultural theory, I have prepared for students more activities in
groups or pairs. For example, discussions , competitions and project works etc.
 So, that students can interact more with each other and get experience in
communication, not be afraid to speak and not experience anxiety or stress
during speaking
 Observation:
 Learners worked in groups and pairs. Everyone was involved. They were
active and motivated. The most unsure students started talking and
communicating with other learners.

 Results:
 The action was successful. They got a desire to speak and develop knowledge.
The learners became more active and motivated. In addition, students
overcame anxiety and stress while speaking.
