WHAT IS DEFINITION OF MORPHOLOGY
AND MORPHEMES?

The word Morphology is from Greece “morphe” that has


meaning “forms”. It means the morphology is a science of
language that focuses on language and how that language special
word   formed.
These building blocks, called morphemes, are the smallest units
of form that bear meaning or have a grammatical function. A
morpheme can be defined as a minimal unit having more or less
constant meaning and more of less constant form. For example,
linguists say that the word buyers is made up of three
morphemes{buy} +{er} +{s}.

FREE MORPHEME

Free morphemes is morpheme that can stand alone to


function as word. It can stand by themselves (i.e. they are
what what we conventionally call words) and either tell us
something about the world (freelexical morphemes) or
play a role in grammar (free grammatical morphemes).
There are two kinds of free morpheme, they are :
Lexical Morpheme (content of word) example noun,
adjective, verb, adverb. And Functional Morpheme
(function words) example pronoun, article, conjunction,
preposition.
BOUND MORPHEME

Bound Morpheme is morpheme that cannot stand


alone by themselves. It is a morpheme that can only
attached to another part of a word.
There are two kinds of Bound Morpheme, they are :
1. Derrivational Morpheme is morpheme that can
produce new words, it can change either the meaning and
word class of root into which they are attached. Example :
(re-,-ment,-ly,-ing, dis-,in-,ness,ous,tion)
Example : Develop – development
Happy- happines
Examine-examination
Danger- dangerous
Accurate- inaccurate
Regular- irregular
BOUND MORPHEME

2. Inflexional Morpheme is morpheme that can not


produce new words and have no change. Inflexional
Morpheme don’t change the class of words and of roots
into word they are attached. It represent relationships
between different parts of a sentence.
Example (-s,est,es,ed)
Example : Book- books
Learn-learned
Run-runs
Short-shortest
Wait- waited

Morphology is one aspect in linguistic specially studies about a word


and linguistic studies about language, to make a good language we must
study about morphology because morphology is one of basics thing in
linguistic. Morphology is very important for every people, because if we
understand morphology, we will easy to make new word.
Free morphemes are those that can stand alone as words.Free
morphemes are also referred as roots. Bound morphemes can occur only in
combination—they are parts of a word.Bound morphemes are also referred
to as affixes, among which there are prefixes, Infixes, and suffixes.
