First conditional

USE:

1.For events that are directed to the future.


If you finish your homework , you’ll play with your friends.

2. For events that are possible to happen in the future.


If you go to bed late, you’ll be tired tomorrow.
FORM:

If + Present Simple, Future Simple


KEY WORDS: unless, when, as soon as, until, before, and after

• Unless (-) = if (+)…


I won’t go unless she invites me. = I won’t go if she doesn’t invite
me.

• as soon as = at the moment when


I’ll call you as soon as I arrive.

EXAMPLES:
She won’t be able to get into university unless she gets good
grades.
As soon as you get your exam results, call me.
We’ll have dinner when your father gets home.
I won’t go to bed until you come home.
I’ll have lunch before I leave.
After I finish university, I’ll probably take a year off and travel.
Second conditional

USE:

1.For events that are directed to the present.


If I knew his number, I would call him .

2. For events that are IMpossible to happen.


If I were you, I would write this rule in the notebooks
FORM:

If + Past Simple, would+V1

If I had more free time, I would (=I’d) take up another hobby.


NOTE:

EXAMPLES
The if clause can come before or after the main clause:
•If I had more money, I would buy an expensive car.
•I’d be so pleased if you helped me.
