Commercial Airlines are used to haul

passengers and freight on scheduled
basis between selected airports.

An AIRLINER is a type of aircraft for
transporting passengers and air cargo. Such
aircraft are most often operated by airlines.

The largest of them are wide-body jets which

are also called twin-aisle because they
generally have two separate aisles running from
the front to the back of the passenger cabin.

And a smaller, more common class of airliners

is the narrow-body or single-aisle.

carry over 350 passengers, these planes can’t
match the 600-passenger capacity of a Boeing 747
in a single class configuration.

26
Light Passenger Jets

◉ In the light passenger jet range, the seating for passengers

is typically 60 to 100. It is also popular for regional routes
because they consume less fuel and require less
investment, an owner can quickly reap a profit by flying
their plane to popular destinations from larger central
hubs.

Since fuel is one of the greatest expenses for an
airliner, this makes them a better investment. A
passenger turboprop can also operate and take off from
shorter runways.

28
Cargo Airplanes

◉ This aircraft can carry 340 cubic feet or 12

passengers. As stated, the propeller-driven
airplanes will reach remote areas with smaller
airstrips.

46

Airport code is a three or four

letter code used to identify a
particular airport in documents
relating to passenger reservations and
ticketing

They are important to quickly distinguish specific
airports instead of having unstandardized long-form
identifiers.

Airport coding first began in the 1930s, and airlines

typically chose their own two-letter codes.

◉ By the late 1940s, there were too many

airports, and the system shifted to the three-
letter code we know today. Los Angeles
International Airport, for instance, was
originally just “LA,” but became LAX in
1947.
◉ Airport codes arose out of the convenience
that the practice brought pilots for location
identification in the 1930s.
49
Did you know?

◉ Initially, pilots in the United States used the

two-letter code from the National Weather
Service (NWS) for identifying cities.
◉ In ICAO airport code, The International Civil
Aviation Organization was formed in 1947
under the auspices of the United Nations, and
it established Flight Information Regions
(FIRs) for controlling air traffic and making
airport identification simple and clear.
