PRESENT PROGRESSIVE/CONTINUOUS AS
FUTURE
We can use the present progressive/continuous
to express future when we have fixed
arrangements (plans) in the near future.

Examples:
She’s going to Spain next week.
Are they coming to the party tonight?

Some future expressions we can use are:


tomorrow, tonight, next week, etc.
Using because to connect clauses
We use the subordinating conjunction because in
response to WHY and Yes/No questions, and place it
either before or after a main clause in affirmative
and negative statements, to express cause or reason.
Examples:

John wanted to drive to New Mexico to visit this
sister. He talked to his wife, Mary. Mary wanted to
visit John´s sister, too. She also hoped to visit
White Sands in New Mexico. John was happy that
Mary wanted to go. That night, they did their
laundry and packed their suitcases.
They also called and made motel reservations. They
wanted to drive from San Antonio to New Mexico.
They hoped to visit John´s sister and also see a
beautiful place in New Mexico.

The next morning the alarm clock woke John and


Mary up early. They had a good breakfast and put
their baggage in the car. They were ready and began
to drive to New Mexico.

VOCABULARY A gas station

John and Mary started their trip with a full tank


of gasoline. After 5 hours. John looked at the
gas gauge. He realized that the tank was almost
empty. He didn´t want to run out of gasoline. He
needed to fill up the tank at the gas station. Ten
minutes later, he was happy that he saw one. At
the gas station. John asked the man ¨Where are
the restrooms?¨ The man said. ¨The men´s room
in on the left, and the ladies´ room is on the
right.¨ John thanked the man and paid for the
gas with his credit card. After they left, John
wasn´t worried about the gas any more.

GRAMMAR: USING ADJECTIVE + THAT
Tom: Hi Bob. I´m pleased that you came to my party.
Bob: I´m happy that I came too.
Tom: Tim isn´t here. Is he angry that I didn´t call him?
Bob: No, he isn´t upset that you didn´t call. He´s busy.
Tom: I think that he´ll be sorry that he didn´t come.
Bob: I think so too, but I´m glad that I came.
'That' in a Clause as an Object
'That' can be used in clauses that act as the object of a verb.

Jennifer hinted that she would be late for class.


Doug knew that he needed to hurry up.
The teacher suggested that we finish our homework.

'That' in a Clause as a Complement to a Noun or an


Adjective

'That' can be used in a clause following a noun or an adjective as a


complement. A complement helps give additional information about the
noun or adjective. It answers the question 'why.'

Examples

Peter is upset that his sister wants to drop out of high school.
Mr. Johnson appreciates our efforts that have brought in a lot of
donations.
She is certain that her son will be accepted to Harvard.

John and Mary arrived at a motel in Alamogordo. New Mexico. They
filled out at a hotel registration card, and the lady at the front desk gave
them the key to room 120. John asked her. ¨Do you have a restaurant at
the motel?¨ The lady said, ¨No I´m sorry. We don´t have a restaurant. But
there is a restaurant across the street.¨
They found room 120 and went in. They liked the room. The bed had
clean sheets, soft pillows, and warm blankets. There was a big soft chair
near the TV and a hard chair at a small desk. Mary was pleased that the
bathroom had a big bathtub. At the end of the day, he likes to take a hot
bath, John looked in the closet. There were only three hangers . He called
the front desk on the room telephone. ¨Excuse me. There are only three
hangers in room 120. We can´t hang out our clothes.¨ The lady said, ¨I
apologize. I´ll bring more hangers in a few minutes.¨

VOCABULARY At the restaurant

At the restaurant, John and Mary had a late dinner. They were
really hungry. They ordered a big meal and iced tea to drink.
When he brought their food, the waiter spilled John´s iced
tea. ¨Oh I'm sorry. I spilled some tea on the floor. Please don't
step on it.¨ John said ¨That's okay. Don't worry about it.¨ After
dinner, they paid the bill and walked back to the motel.

In the motel room John and Mary were so tired. John was glad
to sit down and watch TV. Mary was so happy to bathe in the big
